Thank you for letting us know about this great deal! :)

Guys, if you don't have this set, there won't be a better time to buy it. :) And if you do have it, it would make for a great Christmas gift.

Well, I tried twice to buy this set from Amazon as it was available at a good price. Had to return both for the same reasons:

    - The CD covers were both quite dented and worn on the corners. Looked like it had been kicked around the street a few times. Or repackaged after heavy use.
    - The inner CD cover looked used, with circular wear marks etc.
    - On both sets, 3 of the 4 CDs had glue on them from the case.

Both sets were shipped by a company from Nevada in fulfillment for Amazon. As opposed to ordering from a separate seller on the Amazon site - I ordered this FROM Amazon (just want to make that clear)

Easy to get a refund but I am done ordering music from Amazon. This is not my first issue.

"Fulfillment by Amazon" is NOT the same as ordering directly from Amazon.com. You are still buying from a third-party seller. (And the condition of the products may explain why their price is so low.) Amazon's own price today is only $2.17 more (plus tax, if applicable).

Same issue here with my set for $10.97. It was wrapped but was very beat up and looks as if moisture got to it and the liner pages and CD covers were stuck together. Disc 2 was warped. Yep, warped and of course won't play. Whoever heard of a warped CD? Anyways, got a full refund and was told to dispose of them. I kept Discs 1, 3 and 4 for the trouble as they were flat! I have never received anything so obviously damaged from Amazon but they were quick to refund.

Same here - all beat up. That would explain the good deal!

Well anyway....... I received my copy of this last week, at the $10.97 price. Thanks for the tip!! And yes it did show signs of "shelf wear" or whatever, but all the CDs play fine, the booklet is great -- but yeah it was a little too "shop worn" to be a gift. However I am very happy to have a second copy for myself, esp of A Hundred Years From Today. :D I'll probably give it to my Mom who is also a Sinatra fan!

I just realized I had yet to purchase this disc, so I hopped on line and it's still for sale, thankfully. Placed my order.
Is it the general consensus that this Smithsonian disc is a worthy companion to A Voice On Air?

Created by the same team as an adjunct to the box set. Certainly a worthy companion.

It may even be the best of all 5 discs in that there is less chit chat on it. More music/singing per capita!

Thanks all. I wasn't aware of this disc so now ordered!

The chi chat is part of the magic for me. Frank was such a good humored lad on those recordings. Same for Bing's radio shows.

Yeah, the chit-chat makes me feel more like I'm really listening to one of the shows as it's happening live in the 40's or 50's.

I don't know if you're into Nat King Cole at all, but if you like radio shows of that era, there are two great CDs out there (out of print but popping up on ebay and other sites all the time) that are just killer. Both were released by Vintage Jazz Classics: "Crazy Rhythm: The King Cole Trios, Live 1947-48" and "Straighten Up And Fly Right: Live Radio Rarities, 1942-48." These two discs include a lot of otherwise unavailable recordings of the trio, including a few mini-sets before live audiences in small jazz clubs, as well as excerpts from the trio's own studio-based radio series "King Cole Trio Time." (The latter of the two discs also includes two trio appearances on the radio show "Old Gold Presents Songs By Sinatra" -- and I believe a few tracks from those particular shows now appear on Frank's A Voice On Air.)

Don't let the ghastly cover art on these two discs fool you. They're very listenable in terms of the sound quality -- all things considered -- and they both have excellent liner notes.

"Crazy Rhythm: The King Cole Trios, Live 1947-48" (VJC-1011-2):
King Cole Trio Time, March 6, 1948:
Straighten Up And Fly Right (opening theme)
    Sunday
    Wildroot Cream Oil (ad)
    What’ll I Do?
    I’ve Got A Feeling I’m Falling
    Wildroot Charlie (brief link)
Peg O' My Heart (with Clark Dennis)
You’re The Cream In My Coffee
Straighten Up And Fly Right (closing theme)
King Cole Trio Time, March 13, 1948:
    Your Red Wagon
    I’ve Only Myself To Blame
    The Dickey Bird Song
Beg Your Pardon (with The Dinning Sisters)
    The Geek
Straighten Up And Fly Right (closing theme)
King Cole Trio Time, March 1, 1947:
    Give Me Twenty Nickels
    For Sentimental Reasons
    Tired (with Pearl Bailey)
    Crazy Rhythm

The other track worth the price of the CD is "I'll Get By" when Frank humorously "screams" back at the girls. :biglaugh:

Hollywood On the Radio, Episode 26 - Frank Sinatra:

    Episode 26: Frank Sinatra

Please note that while "I Heard You Cried Last Night" IS on A VOICE ON AIR, the version the host plays is from another performance/source, even though she described it as from the set. We never would have put something on the set in sound like that...

BTW - "I Heard You Cried Last Night" was possibly the most problematic song on the set to get to sound right, even though it was never going to be high fidelity. The master disc had an introduction/announcement in very nice sound from New York, where the disc was cut, but Sinatra was in Hollywood performing the song (hence the "here we go to Hollywood..." announcement heard on the box set version), and the sound coming over the phone line was not close to ideal. Then work needed for this disc in restoration, getting acceptable tone/balance, etc., was a hair puller. Andreas deserves an award for his patience and great work on that song alone.

The more I listen to this set the more I seem to enjoy it. As much as I love Frank's more mature voice and the the way he interpreted at that stage, his early voice is unbelievably good. Think I'm running out of adjectives when it comes to FS!

This set is a must have.
