Frank Sinatra Set from Sony/Legacy, 1935-1955 Radio Performances, "A Voice on Air"*

I think it’s the other way round. Modern suits are cut 3 sizes too small.

 

As I recall, the shows are not properly identified in the liner notes (or something similar). @Bob F can chime in on this. I have the info printed out and in the box set, but I am not near it now to properly identify the "issues". BTW, it is a GREAT set!

 

As I recall, the show descriptions in the booklet are not in either chronological nor disc/track order, plus there are some mistakes. Unfortunately, my extensive research and corrections were posted only at the Sinatra Family Forum, and I did not save a backup copy.

I consider the CD edition of this box-set a basic, essential part
of any Frank Sinatra collection. Although not comprehensive,
it is a fair sampling of Sinatra's broadcasts in the 1940s and I
think a few shows are complete. The sound is generally good
enough to be enjoyed and even cranked up, although it is a bit
sharp and narrow. There is some overlap with A VOICE ON AIR
but of course the organization, sound and editing are infinitely
better on the latter.

This package is comprised of 60 radio shows, originally broadcast between 1943 and 1954, which featured Frank Sinatra in a starring or guest role. The Compact Disc version contains 30 discs in plastic sleeves, housed within a book-style fold-open plastic container. The following post contains a brief listing of the radio shows. Each of these 60 shows and its history is documented completely in the enclosed booklet, which also contains numerous black-and-white photos.

Some of the shows are dramas, comedies, or newscasts, which do not include singing by FS. On the many shows with musical numbers, the songs are not delineated specially on CD; each complete show is a separate track. The FS songs are listed separately, in the second following post, with timing cues to allow easy location within their containing CD tracks.

As of this posting, this set (both CD and cassette version) is no longer listed at the publisher's website: Radio Spirits.

The Radio Spirit Box set is highly recommendable. I assembled and burnt all of Sinatra‘s songs on three Cd discs and the result is just as satisfying as the Voice on air set. More than 90 recordings in nice sound quality.

If I may chime in, this is a really great set for any serious Sinatra collector to own. My favorites are his guest appearances in 1943.
really early appearances, give you a snapshot of the momentum & projection where he was headed. It appears, to me, that everybody wanted him, as
a guest.

 

Sinatra radio appearances, including his many radio series, are, I would have to say, of all the many areas to collect with Sinatra, my favorite.
Starting with the Harry James Band, there are all the Big Band broadcasts. You would not believe the many, many titles Sinatra sang with Dorsey
that he never recorded. He sang the Disney song " When You Wish Upon A star " I am dying to find that broadcast. There is Sinatra singing " God Bless America " in Central Park, a once in a lifetime event caught by a radio microphone.

 

So this is a little bit off-topic, but related, I think-- (as its about Sinatra and radio shows) ----- if I'm not mistaken, Frank Sinatra had his own radio show in about 1952-55, and performed many songs (some of which he had never commercially recorded) - and some of these recordings circulate in an unofficial cd called (I think?) 'to be perfectly frank'. Is there any talk of the Sinatra estate somehow getting the rights to these recordings (if they don't have them already) and cleaning up the sound and issuing them? Seems that this would be a really 'must-have' item if it was issued- songs like 'i'm in the mood for love'. 'tenderly', 'this can't be love', and 'between the devil and the deep blue sea' are on that set and I don't think there were ever other versions he recorded officially anywhere.

I just found the Radio Spirits 30 CD Sinatra and Friends set in September here locally in Wichita. Probably the best $1 I've ever spent.
