I was being facetious, but here: ‘My Way’ 50th Anniversary and ‘Sinatra Sings Alan & Marilyn Bergman’coming October 2019
@Bob F Is that SFF thread the best place to find info on the nature of the Sinatra hi-res releases, such as mastering used? I’ve been wanting to buy some Sinatra from HD Tracks, but I want to make sure I do my homework first. I really want good digital versions of Capitol albums that weren’t released by MFSL, for example.
I linked to that SFF post as a good hi-res list, one which I try to keep updated. Matt’s (@MLutthans) website is the best place for audio info and comparisons: Welcome Sinatra Cole Capitol Scorecard
I can’t read all 100+ pages of this to find an answer, but are the only CD options for Sinatra’s Capitol albums still those awful CDs mastered in 1998? I know Only the Lonely got a reissue. What about Wee Small and Swinging Lovers?
Wee Small Hours: LP/HD reissue in 2014; no new CD Swingin’ Lovers: hybrid SACD by MFSL in 2014; LP in 2016 Several more Capitol albums on CD/hybrid SACD/LP by MFSL, and LP/HD by UMe
Listened to the complete Trilogy album a few weeks ago. And once again I was stunned by the rather weak choice of songs on "The Present". Although without a doubt there are a few highlights there, I still can't see why a nice swinging recording like "Isn't she lovely" was deleted and "Song sung blue" was kept. People are always picking on "Some enchanted evening" (later 60's version) and "Mrs Robinson" (which both I like very much). go and check out "Song sung blue".
Have forever said that The Present was the weakest link in that Trilogy. Mr. S was performing some really decent tunes in concert by young songwriters ("There' Something About You" and "Remember" by Elton John first come to mind). One could even throw in "Maybe This Time" as well...but maybe he didn't want to over Ebb & Kander and Liza. The record plays thru OK up to and included "Summer Me, Winter Me". The rest are poorly done. And that CHORUS????? Why?
...Some ways back here I posted about and linked to two articles from the New York Times' Sunday magazine that both followed a " The Great American Popular Songbook is coming back! " tenor (BTW, when did that phrase really start being used widely as a way to sell albums with divers in black tie and formals on the cover?). One by Sidney Zion from the early Eighties used the success of " Trilogy " (platinum) as a foundation for its " That rock'n'roll stuff is PLAYED OUT! Didja' hear me? " argument. Additional stuff in another draft was lost, more later.
I have a copy of that magazine in my scrapbook collection of Mr. S memorabilia. I dug out the one with all of the Trilogy reviews and ads. Everybody loved The Past, was so-so on The Present and still scratching their heads as to what to make of The Future. BTW, on release date, Trilogy sold for $13.99 to $17.99 and "where available" tape for $14.99 to 18.99 . That is $50.00 (rounded off) in today's world!
The 1990 Reprise boxset. What are some thoughts on the mastering and song selection for such an extensive period?
As already mentioned earlier, "Nice 'n' Easy" will be the next Sinatra album to get the UMG treatment: https://www.udiscovermusic.com/news/frank-sinatra-nice-n-easy-60th-anniversary-editions/ The new release will contain session material of the title song and "I've Got A Crush On You". I can't help, but I found the press statement to be very confusing.
You’re not the only one. BTW, ongoing discussions here: Sinatra / Capitol Sound Quality and General Discussion: "Nice 'n' Easy" - 1960* Sinatra album Nice 'n' Easy. Thoughts?
Is this the first Capitol album since Only the Lonely to receive a reissue like this? I’ve lost track of my Frank news. Please tell me I didn’t miss a reissue of Come Dance With Me.
On a lighter threadcrap um… note, of a non-musical nature, has everyone seen this? New Bulova Frank Sinatra Watch Collection (Sinatra Family Forum)
It’s such a long thread.... The UMe version of the world we knew sounds LOUD, and to me subway and a couple of others sound distorted . Or is it just me???
It is a very long thread indeed -- started 'bout 7 years ago. To me it's nothing more than the corporate move that killed MoFi's Sinatra program.
I think this is the right thread to post this. I collect Various Artist's cd's, only if it has a Sinatra track. I just received a U.K. import on the Kent / Ace label " The Songs of Teddy Randazzo " there is a Sinatra track .. " Rain In My Heart " which was a Reprise 45 in the 60's. Only 1 Sinatra track among many other artist's who had hits with his songs. I had never heard Randazzo's singing voice .. not bad reminds me of Franke Valli.
