That's all I'm interested in from here on out. Guitar improv, and ensemble playing. I don't need anymore versions of FZ's "greatest hits" which is why I find the complete concert releases mostly unsatisfying.

There’s a lot to choose from out there... and not everything will please each and every Zappa fans. I am casual FZ fan so unless rated exceptional, I am not going for most of the new releases.

My guess is this one is exceptional.

I love the Gary Panter covers
they are some of my absolute favourite album covers!
really portraits the fractured genius of Frank Zappa.
very hip and now if you ask me....

I'm so glad we are getting this!
If the ZFT wants Frank to be remembered as one of the greatest American composers than we need this material.
This will tide me over till a YELLOW SHARK project/object

Not lately. We've had the deluxe 'Zappa In New York', a complete 'Roxy' box, a deluxe 'Uncle Meat', an 'Apostrophe Vol. 2' set, the upcoming 'Hot Rats' box and the expanded 'Orchestral Favorites.'. Compare that to the 'Halloween 77' USB stick, 'Chicago 78' and 'Little Dots.'

I agree. I love the non rock composition stuff played by a large ensemble. This looks like a great set for 27 dollars.

This new edition was mastered by Bob Ludwig. Some discoveries in the vault have made this superior new edition possible.

"After extensive searches in the Vault, the elusive master tone reel, the essential component that contains the alignment tones that help set up the playback of the master tapes that Zappa reportedly did not provide when he turned in the album, was found, allowing the Zappa Family Trust to present the audio as originally intended. Coupled with new hi-res transfers from the original tapes and mastering by Bob Ludwig, the music sounds the best it ever has. The bonus concert features brand new 2019 mixes by Craig Parker Adams from the original 2” 24-track masters."

Joe said once he found a gig tape from that time with Ed Greene (L.A. studio player) on drums.

Do the two live discs duplicate anything from the original album?

"The original album was derived from recording sessions in the afternoon without an audience which was then meticulously edited together by Zappa using a razorblade," according to the promo text on zappa.com. I guess we'll find out if Zappa edited in any of the live takes.

Is it uncommon to splice with a razorblade? As I recall that was common practice with compact cassettes ... but maybe I'm a dictatorial control freak and never realised!

Yes, sweet price as well: £18.10 from amazon.co.uk with no import fuss to worry about. Makes me wonder why the ZFT haven't hit that price point in the past.

That is a really nice Tee design! I didn't see the "pulled" official art the other day - is this it?

I'm young, but I got into Frank a few years before the 2012's which are now the "basic" benchmark for the main discography in most cases. It's really awesome that things keep getting better and they are actively releasing things. I feel really bad for you guys that have been into Frank since "back in the day" and have had to wait so long! :D

  23. Wow. I had no idea the album didn't derive from the live concert. OK, so I'm totally in on this then.

We still have loads of vinyl, cassettes, 8 tracks and 2 or 3 remastered cd versions to listen while waiting for new releases... :uhhuh:

Oh that's right, Zappa gave them the tapes but not the tones.
