Interesting memories from Gary Panter posted on Zappa's official Facebook artist page:

I like Gary Panter's covers, especially "Studio Tan".

"Orchestral Favorites" is the one with the skull on the back.

I wish the original mix of "Studio Tan" were still available on CD.

But most of all, I wish someone would hire an orchestra
to record Frank Zappa's masterpiece, "Sinister Footwear".

Imagine if "Abbey Road" were only available on some
rare bootleg with poor sound quality.

Studio Tan, at best, is “alright” but Sleep Dirt & Orchestral Favourites are not at all to my taste. But then, Zappa covers are generally ugly ... it was very much part of his aesthetic I think.

what exactly are a master tone reel and alignment tones, and why are they significant?

I'm certain that someone here knows a quite a bit more than me about this and will respond, but I assume that they are essential for reproducing correct playback speed and tonal equalization.

Looking forward to this one, but still holding out hope for an expanded Bongo Fury release someday.

I have it too. It’s so much better than that awful re-mix.

I wanted to buy several more as presents for Xmas 2017.
I couldn’t believe it was unavailable already!

I wound up giving people “Riccardo Fassi Tankio”,
which I think is also out of print.

If you like “Studio Tan”, you should get “Perfect Strangers”.
I say it’s Zappa’s best live album. The performances and
    sound quality are amazing.

Yes! Just look who was the conductor on this one! Aside from it’s unorthodox revision of the Beethoven 5th symphony, did anything ever went wrong with Boulez?

And if you like his rendition of the Perfect Stranger then you might want to look at his 67 CD boxset.

You might be thinking of the wrong album. Pierre Boulez has a 67 CD set.

The conductor of "Perfect Strangers" is Thomas Søndergård.

But you're right - "The Perfect Stranger" does start out like Beethoven's Fifth.

I just bought this a propos this release. The performances are very good and this is a hybrid SACD with multichannel, so it's well worth picking up before it gets scarce and the price shoots up.

I get it. I was referring to ´The Perfect Stranger’ album and not ´Perfect Strangers’ which is conducted by Søndergård. Will check it out.

  20. I'll probably pass on this release. I'm not the biggest Zappa orchestral music fan.

Why put that stupid clip on this thread? The big Boulez Sony box is out of print but there are several smaller sets of the material including Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Ravel, Bartok, and Webern.

I wish I had known the 2012 Studio Tan was original mix. I would have bought one.

I still don't get why some 2012 Zappa remasters are out of print already. Luckily, I bought all those I was interested in, but it bothers me anyway.
