What can I say. Oops! Although I love the movie, seen it many times, it's been awhile.
On my kitchen windowsill I have a black knight chesspiece that you can pop open and has a tiny space to hide something in, like microfilm... It used to belong to my sister and I don't know where she got it from. Must be what I was subconsciously thinking of.

Since I'm here might as well post an episode from the very bizarre Canadian/German sci-fi series Lexx "The Game" featuring a very bizarre high stakes chess match... Kind of a mixture of The Seventh Seal and The Prisoner episode" Checkmate".

The judge is playing chess and Vinny accidentally knocks the pieces of the board.

 

The Bodyguard. Kevin Costner his character plays a forever ongoing game with his father.

A bit of embellishment IMO. It's true that the young Kubrick made money hustling chess, but it was mainly to buy nicer photographic equipment. His family was working class, but they weren't poor.

Fun Fact: The chess pieces are from the Peter Ganine “Classic” chess set, manufactured in the 1960s. They are relatively rare and highly sought after by chess set collectors and Star Trek fans. Complete, undamaged sets sell for over $1000. Not to be confused with the Peter Ganine “Gothic” chess set, which were also used on Star Trek but are plentiful and easy to find.

 

Did 3-D chess ever make it into any of the films? I have only seen the first six, but I don't remember them playing the game ever in those ones.

 

I think you'd need a proper Trekker to answer that one. I can't find any pics.
