Haven't been able to buy this from the store. Arriving on thursday, the 2 cd version. I have been waiting for a copy to become available. Looking forward to hearing it!
I saw them last Tuesday and they were good as always. Not one of the best Garbage shows I've seen, but still good. Nice reception from the crowd, too - way better than the largely disinterested audiences I saw when they opened for Blondie a few years ago. Makes sense Garbage would get a better reception from an Alanis crowd, though, since both were at their popular peak in the same period whereas Blondie peaked 15 years before Garbage debuted!
Was it mostly like they were a co-headliner and played a full set, or were they clearly the opening act and only had 30-45min to do their thing?
Garbage: 12 songs, about an hour on stage (give or take). Alanis: 18 songs, about 1:45 on stage (give or take). So Garbage played longer than a standard opening act - those usually get 30-40 minutes - but less than a "co-headliner". The ads sell the show on Alanis's name with Garbage as "special guest", so it's not being touted as co-headlining. The Blondie/Garbage shows were sold that way, though, and IIRC, the sets were closer to being equivalent. Blondie always closed the shows, but I think they were similar in length...
BTW, on Setlist.fm, Alanis's set was regularly listed at 24 songs and then became 18. This was because "songs" that were just interludes got blended into other songs. For instance. the 24-song set lists "Hands Clean" on its own, whereas the 18-song combines it with "Forgiven". Before I looked closely, I thought we got ripped off at my 18-song show! But the set's been consistent, so no actual loss of songs!
Any word if they will tour this album as headliners? I’d like to catch a full setlist featuring the new material.
No indications this will happen. They were supposed to play UK with Blondie this fall, but those shows got rescheduled to 2022 and Garbage won't be on the bill. Maybe they bailed on Blondie because they want to do their own dates? No idea. Nothing on their announced tour schedule right now.
bummer, but thanks for reply. I’m not crazy about Shirley’s lyrics on the new album, but the music is great and overall I enjoy most of the new songs.
Agree. Would be nice to get at least a couple dozen US dates as headliners. They always sell well here in DC! Not sure if they're skipping the usual headliner dates due to COVID or something else. That said, at least we got some Garbage shows this year. After 2020, I'll take it!
They are doing a joint US summer tour with Tears for Fears. I find that a bit disappointing although I like Tears for Fears. I was really hoping for a solo headlining tour, although there might still be time early in the year. They seem like an odd match with Tears for Fears.
The point of double bills are to bring in different audiences, casual date night fans or family outing. 2+2=5 from a promoter angle. Something like TFF/Duran might be too much much over lap. 2+2=3 from promoter angle if too many fans would pay the same if only one of the 2 acts showed up. Skipping Toronto/Canada on that tour is very interesting.
But don’t usually successful bills have something in common, not totally different audiences. For instance Alanis is from the same time period, guitar rock oriented and has very confessional lyrics, just like Garbage. Garbage and Blondie had more in common also although they were from different time periods. You don’t want them to be too different or people won’t think it’s worth it to buy tickets which tend to be quite expensive if they don’t like both acts. I just noticed these dates don’t conflict with the UK dates with Blondie they backed out of, which were earlier in the year. So maybe there is still time to do some headlining shows.
Also Duran Duran would never tour with another 80s act like TFF because they like to be seen as modern and not a nostalgia act. And I don’t see that DD and TFF have that much in common musically. TFF is more mature AC, and DD is more uptempo and less serious with more rock and electro elements.
Personally I think this a really good double bill! I've only seen TFF once about 5 years ago but I remember them being really solid live and having great front-of-house sound even in a 18,000 seater outdoors. I always prefer to see Garbage as a headliner but like a few other bands I love it just doesn't seem to be in the cards to get them on their own tours anymore. You have to think TFF will make sure they get proper staging & soundchecks, along with probably playing at least an hour as I don't recall TFF being on stage for more than 2 hours tops. Plus.........there'll be opportunity for Shirley to come out with TFF and do the female vocal part for 'Woman In Chains'.
I'm sure the promoters saw how well the H&O with TFF pulled in different decade fans, and Garbage with Blondie too.

But Hall and Oates and TFF aren't "different decade fans" - both peaked in the 80s. They tended to appeal to different audiences back then but that all gets lost in the haze of nostalgia. Blondie and Garbage was a thematic connection: male bands with iconic female lead singers. Alanis/Garbage = 90s "alternative" with female singers. TFF/Garbage seems weirder to me!
