Fiery guitarist. Who Do You Love personifies the San Francisco Sound, free form FM radio, and psychedelic rock. RIP, sir.

RIP, Gary Duncan. Just a couple of days ago I completed my QMS record collection and got a copy of Solid Silver.

Twodawgzz But why do you ask such questions...

Watching Gary Duncan and John Cipollina weave guitar runs around each other at many concerts in the late 60's in the S.F. Bay Area was one of the most astounding and enjoyable things in music I have ever seen.

Not having the chance to see the original lineup is one of my bigger musical regrets. I saw them a few times later and saw john several times with other bands but not together.

Great stuff. Wish I saw them in the early days. Didn’t get to start seeing them until very late Sixties - early Seventies. Saw them lots then at Fillmore West in SF. Gary actually had quit the band in the first show I saw and returned shortly after.

Great player. I still get a lot of mileage out of those Quicksilver albums.

I really enjoyed his work with Cipollina on Happy Trails. He left his mark.

I’m not super familiar with the band but from what I saw he was a damn fine guitarist. Sorry to hear this.

Just as surely as Tom Verlaine is not nearly as good in a solo context as he is when Richard Lloyd is behind him…just as surely as the Dead wouldn't be half as interesting despite anything Garcia might do if Weir weren't behind him…

So it was with Quicksilver. There's no doubt that John Cipollina was an astonishingly inventive and totally original guitarist — but Gary Duncan both behind him and out front gave the band a unique flavoring. His style was also all his own, and it was very effective.
