To answer the question: Ivo Watts from the 4ad label is a big fan of Gene Clark . In a cover project from the 80s (called This Mortal Coil) some of his artists were allready being asked to cover some Gene Clark songs. That's why the (post-)punk generation is familiair with a musician like Gene Clark. And I am one of them...
That's why I purchased immediately the DeLuxe box set but as SACD fan I hate to get a box set with vinyl. What can I do with these vinyl albums without a record player? If there is a vinyl nut reading this post, give me, please, a dm somewhere in november as this box set is released... It would be pity to lock the rest of the box set somewhere at the ceiling. PS: Dear music labels, please stop with those silly combinations of vinyl and records in one box set! Thank you.
Don't forget that the entire box is technically audiophile quality being on SACD (hybrid) and Blu-ray. There's also the cost of paying the people who worked on it.
There's a lot more to it than I thought. I thought it was just for 3 discs! It looks good. No Other is a strange one for me. Gene Clark has wrote and recorded some of my favourite music ever, as well as some of my favourite albums with the Gosdin Brothers, White Light and the Fantastic Expedition of Dillard and Clark, but I've never really got into No Other, even though I've owned it for around 20 years. It just hasn't clicked.
I’m so tempted to buy this before it sells out but £146 is giving me serious pause for thought. It is super expensive.
"No Other" is such a great album - glad it's getting a remaster/expansion. I discovered it about 8 years ago or so, being played over the store system at Rough Trade in Brooklyn. It was one of those albums I heard ("Silver Raven"), had to buy on the spot, and immediately loved (CD). I'm in for the 2 CD and possibly the vinyl. For me, it's one of those albums that I just get lost in and always need to hear start to finish either via headphones or over loudspeakers with no distractions. Similar to (and others I can't think of at the moment): David Crosby - If I Could Only Remember My Name Terry Reid - River Bobby Charles - S/T Michael Chapman - Fully Qualified Survivor Gregg Allman - Laid Back I'll be spinning this album this evening.
It won' t be under my Christmas tree ( sniffle) . Can I drop in for a listen? I'll bring some egg nog.
I think there's a live set from around the time from Ebbets Field that was doing the rounds a few years ago. THought it had several of the lp tracks on it.
One of those cases where the the stripped down version - the 2CD set - could have used an extra disc to give those for whom the deluxe is a bit out of reach, just a little more. There could have easily been a 3CD set with more outtakes, or the 2019 remix included.
Yeah, it's too bad there's not a CD-only release with all the material but without the other bells and whistles. I suppose they didn't want to do that because there are completeists who would buy it rather than the big deluxe set if that was an option. I guess they are doing what they think they have to do to make this project financially successful.
