Well, you never know since the remixes have been so widely panned across the internet for the brickwalling and the incorrect/alt elements used in the mixes (wrong vocals, missing or alternate overdubs used, etc...). They may bring the original mixes back. They wouldn't be the first. I'm aware of at least two fairly high profile examples one of which escapes me at the moment and the other is John Lennon. All his albums were remixed (with the original mixes going OOP) Then a decade or so later they hyped up the reinstatement of the original mixes (sold together in a box set, and also available individually). Like I said someone else did almost exactly the same thing, but...ah...its on the tip of my tongue (or I guess tip of my fingers) but I can't quite remember who at the moment. Anyway the fact that the original mixes went OOP either isn't true, isn't true everywhere, or they've got a ton of unsold stock still sitting on record store shelves, because the chain record store in my town still has plenty of the circa 1994 'Definitive Edition Remasters" in stock - over a decade since they were supposed to go OOP.
... so over night this thread has turned into the usual boring negativists vs. positivists fight, how lame...
It's the mastering unfortunately. I've listened to like 5 different copies of Wind and Wuthering and I've settled on the 1994 edition. And it's not the best thing in the world. That ATCO Trick however is great... no idea. The next album... yeah I've long given up on that one, I believe no decent sounding version exists on the planet at this point
I mean you can, but it's not really a solution. That's still not close to the dynamics of Trick though. Even comparing both LP releases, Trick is leaps and bounds better than Wind.
Your Own Special Way Written by Rutherford we have a lilting swaying ballad/love song which really does have a really nice melody. We start off with a really nice guitar figure and Collins coming in with the vocal. It's a pretty vocal from Collins as well. The first chorus comes in just before the 1:30 mark and it is augmented with some nice little riffs and it is also very well paced, they aren't rushing the words out. Also the backing vocals are very nicely arranged and work very well in the verses. We have a key change that moves into a very nice little keyboard section, and a solo electric piano at that too. The emphasis here is on subtlety. We move back around to the original key and into the last verse and Chorus. I know some folks say this song is overly long, but the mellow pace and the swaying 6 beat feel make it seem a little shorter than it is to me. I think it works well, but it is somewhat different from most of the album, and perhaps with the album being generally more mellow, it makes it seem like too much for some. This isn't a favourite song or anything like that, but it certainly isn't bad, and it does fit into this album well, in a musical context.
Your Own Special Way - the weakest track on the album, meaning like almost as good as anything they did in the rest of their career (we're getting close now ) Saved by the instrumental mid section, which is quite beautiful.
Tony's only use of Fender Rhodes electric piano, right? (Not counting the artificial Rhodes sound on I Can't Dance) I don't love this song! If it were waaaaaay shorter, I would gladly tolerate it in a "look, they're evolving as songwriters!" kinda way. But this song outstays its welcome by many minutes. And that keyboard interlude is dreadful. I always felt Rutherford & Co. we're trying to pull one over on their diehard "prog" fans with this song; it comes across (IMO) as disingenuous. You want to write a more-direct, less complicated song? Sure, but don't pad it out to seven minutes long, just get on with it. I think a sharply editted "love song" would have stood a better chance of making both "camps" happy [not to devolve into whether Genesis fans are divided into camps or not; you know what I mean here]. As it stands, diehard Proggers skip this one (I know I do, even if it has its charms) and the general public don't know it exists. I guess there was a single edit, right?
Your Own Special Way A sappy acoustic ballad. Not that there's anything wrong with that. And not that far removed from Ripples, actually. It's as long as it needs to be, given the tempo. Nice vocals and harmonies from Phil. I always thought that Steve was playing a weeping steel guitar on this track, but it's not listed as an instrument. I prefer the version I heard on the Invisible Touch tour, in which the middle section was performed by a string quartet, instead of the Styx-sounding solo electric piano. --Geoff
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that live version ONLY happened on the Australian tour. (Right?)
Mama, Abacab, Domino, Your Own Special Way, In Too Deep, The Brazilian, That's All, Home By The Sea/ Second Home By The Sea, Throwing It All Away, medley: In The Cage/ In That Quiet Earth/ Apocalypse in 9/8/ As Sure As Eggs Is Eggs, Invisible Touch, Los Endos, Turn It On Again-medley Apparently this is the setlist from the Australian tour for Invisible Touch. The interesting thing about this concert, which is the only time I ever got to see Genesis. I only had Nursery Cryme, And Then There Were Three and Genesis in my collection at this point, so aside from the singles and the "Genesis" tracks, I didn't know much of it. I did really enjoy it though, and that lead me to buy more of there albums, starting with Three Sides and Lamb I think. I didn't get Invisible Touch or We Can't Dance until the 5.1 boxsets came out.
One positive thing about Your Own Special Way is that the lyrics about a seaman missing his woman/wife/partner really match the music, especially the verses. It puts the picture of a lonely man out to sea right into my imagination, and the melancholy feel adds a lot to the cold, wintry mood this album projects. It could be faded out before the instrumental part starts at 3:40 to make this track a bit more reasonable lengthwise, or at least take out the piano interlude that really goes nowhere and adds nothing. I also don't like Phil's vocals. The construct of the melody isn't in his range and it sounds like he is really straining to hit the high notes. Overall, I think YOSW is pretty dull, and in My Own Special World, I'd replace this and the next track with Inside & Out or at least the "Out" part of I&O (if I&O existed at the time.) Heck, with the first two tracks, we're looking at 17 minutes on side 1 already; maybe just exorcising YOSW and track 4 would give the record better sonics.
There's a (really) truncated version of YOSW on the "Mike Douglas Show" performance along with "Afterglow". It's on YouTube and the blue box.
I have a soft spot for this one as I used to sing it to my young daughter at night to get her to sleep. And if you think PHIL had trouble hitting the high notes...

I am a sucker for a good ballad, but Your Own Special Way is just a bit too sappy for me, with the high register Collins sings in combined with the guitar in the chorus. It just makes me cringe.
I think it's a step down from Ripples lyrically, but I do love that middle section. It's some very nice synth stuff from Banks and a high point, the issue being the song itself is arranged questionably. Particularly the guitar in the chorus and the vocal overdubs aren't really needed. Had it been stripped down a bit and take the middle bit out as to not make it needlessly long (even though I enjoy it) probably would have worked better. The 1987 live edition is pretty good. It really does work better with strings, which makes you wonder why they at least used the Mellotron during the chorus if nothing else.
“Your Own Special Way” is a very nice track. It’s too long and could have been shortened by removing the instrumental section in the middle, but it’s the first song on this album that I really enjoy. It’s a relief to hear a simple love song after the earls of mar and massed armies on the first two cuts. The melody and the sentiments are beautiful.
I remember seeing that after school when it originally aired. My brother had just bought the album. Seeing them on Mike Douglas was as anomalous as Tom Waits' appearance on the show around that time. Also Labelle doing Lady Marmalade.
Okay Genesis fans - don't hate me for my next (meant to be funny) post. Your Own Special Way is where Genesis begin to head towards what the band call "romantic" or "female-friendly" music. I call it "cheesy" or "sappy" music. Now, I DO like the song but completely agree with others that it goes on far, far too long to be a nice little pop song with a romantic slant. The Mike Douglas version is better for the everyday housewife's needs - but there was always something that I thought that was familiar about the chorus melody. Bear in my mind, I discovered W & W in 1982 after going backwards and buying all the Genesis albums I didn't already have. There was something about Your Own Special Way that hit my "cheese" button, and I couldn't put my finger on it. Then I heard a familiar song on the radio, and thought - nah, it couldn't be. I of course realized that Genesis came first, in 1977, but listen to the melody below: Hoo boy. Was Lionel a Genesis fan? It's a coincedidence, right? Ha ha ha. But now, whenever I hear Your Own Special Way, I can't un-hear Lionel Richie. You can hate me now.
I wouldn't use the sexistic term "female-friendly" but yes, this is the first sign of them going cheesy.
