yeah, agree on many points here. I like the When in Rome dvd just for the Doc Come Rain or Shine. I went to the tour, while I must say the performance on When in Rome is a bit more energetic, then what I saw in Amsterdam. I just felt they tried too much to sound like the old band while you could clearly see and hear Phil was struggeling. The key changes dont bother me too much, I rather have that then a band struggeling. Frankly I would rather see Phil just do the vocals parts, now even more in hindsight since this tour was the cause of his backproblems. The moment in the documentary when you see Phil realising drumming is REALLY hard to pickup after so many years not playing would for me be the moment to say "you know what, I just do the vocals, let Chester do all the drumparts". The fans would have understand, and maybe the band would enjoy themselves a bit more instead of just struggeling to get through the songs.
That would have made for a much more interesting film, I think. Like, okay ignoring the fact they did two other albums and everything else - if the entire thing is about what the band did in the context of Genesis, you can basically say everything barring Ray Wilson ending in 86. Tony never a had a big solo career. Hackett didn't. Phil sold more albums. Peter sold more albums. Mike had his band. Genesis played stadium tours. The end.
And to be fair, 'Supper's Ready' fades out in both studio and live performances but it's considerably more natural sounding
I hung out in Calgary quite a bit in 1999-2000. My then girlfriend worked at Yuk Yuks Comedy Club. Great town and beautiful country
Has there been any discussion of the Archive 1 and 2 boxsets? Aside from individual songs mentioned early on?
I already said upthread I found it depressing. Not much more to say actually. I listened to the record but didn't watch the video.
I was talking about this: Tony Banks - Soundtracks I should have used a capital 'S' but it was just meant as a joke. Hard to pick up in a written format
In which case, it is my duty to correct the statement, as it contains potentially two mistakes. 1) Those film scores, Tony made 'em for free ("for the experience") 2) Tony's records don't sell (except the first one and the orchestral ones) and this was no exception. Plus, the movies were ****e and the few people who saw them certainly had no push to buy the soundtrack as a memento. His major source of revenue was and has always been Genesis. In the When In Rome documentary, Tony Smith makes an interesting consideration, when he states that the others had a solo career but, for Banks, Genesis is his solo career.
Dukes Intro I think this was a great way to start this show. I also though the stage set up, although a little ostentatious was pretty damn good.
Turn It On Again The band kicks hard into Turn It On Again. Obviously the guys are older, You can hear Phil is singing differently ... and it always sad hearing guys having become less than they once were, but I personally don't dislike this. I think it is another piece of nostalgia. Sure I may go to another concert for peak power Genesis, but there is something about this dvd that I like... and maybe I can't put my finger on it.

My only time seeing them live. It turned me from a casual fan to a big fan. The power of the longer instrumentals live in an outdoor venue was phenomenal. And starting with Duke’s Intro was a really nice surprise. I can see how those who saw them in 1981 or 1983 would be a little disappointed in this show. But for those of us who missed the an earlier round, it was great.
This was the press release issued from the band's website, care of World of Genesis: This morning at 11 a.m. (EST), Tony Banks, Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford met with North American press in New York City to confirm the 2007 Turn It On Again reunion tour dates for the United States and Canada and the new, forthcoming 5.1 remasters of their back catalog in that part of the world. As previously announced at the European tour press conference on November 7, 2006, the reunion tour includes the popular late '70s to early '90s touring line up with Chester Thompson supporting the band on drums and Daryl Stuermer supporting on guitar and bass. The tour, which includes 13 major North American cities, begins September 7th in Toronto, Canada and concludes October 12th at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, California. Other cities included are Philadelphia, Boston, Washington D.C., Hartford, and more (see dates below). Despite some serious technical problems with the sound early on during the press conference, Genesis answered a short flurry of questions. They shared that they chose not to do corporate sponsorships on the tour, since their are obligations related to that they they did not want to deal with. Phil Collins said once again that this Genesis show was "a series of shows" and not a proper tour, per se. Tony revealed that there are some good surprises in the medleys the band will play beyond the hits you would expect, but that there are no plans for special guest appearances by anyone (obviously, Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett are implied, but were not mentioned). Sep 07, 2007 Toronto ON CA BMO Field Phil Collins said that the tour set list would differ from the last two tours the band did, and that it was apparently still being finalized at the time of the conference. Collins shared that the band met a few years ago in Scotland while he was on his First Final Farewell solo tour with all five members of the popular line up from the early '70s in attendance. Due to Gabriel's schedule, it did not work out with the full 5-man line up, but that presented the opportunity to tour under the popular 3-piece line up (supported by two). Phil said that there is a possibility that the initial plan to tour performing the Lamb Lies Down On Broadway with the 5-man line up could happen in the future, but there are no plans right now. Releasing the archive recordings from prior tours was also discussed, but Tony said that he did not expect them to come out this year due to more immediate issues related to this tour. Tony Banks revealed that there will be no free shows in North America, despite the free concert scheduled in Rome, Italy on the European leg of the tour. Mike said that Genesis may contribute to Al Gore's Live Earth concerts from London, but that it is actually not completely confirmed yet, because they have a concert that night and the logistics would need to be worked out. Phil Collins stated that while he is not involved with ticket prices that there was an attempt to keep ticket prices as reasonable as possible given the costs associated with the production. As previously stated, he said if the tour was about making money that they would schedule 60 shows, not what they are scheduled to do.
Cage Curiously Phil seems to hold better this old one that the previous two "pop" tunes... It seems to me he's more invested into giving a new interpretation. Or at least it works better. I don't like much Chester's choices though. Cinema This one is so good it always works, no matter what. Quiet Earth A rockier take I don't really like, it takes all the mood away Duke Better but a pity that the guitar replaces the vocal part (most likely too demanding for Phil, now)
I didn't buy the live album until the Live 1973-2007 box came out. I only got it to fill the gap in the box for the sake of completeness. As playing it, I don't think I ever bothered to listen to it. The video I bought a month after it was released and if I recall, it was only available at Walmart. The concert film was a great document of the tour and yeah, a bit taken back with how the songs are down a key. Which is now why I never listened to the companion live album. The best thing about DVD's are the docs and like a kid who goes for the desert, I watched those first. Surprised this wasn't reissued on Blu-ray. Come on guys!
