It's a shame that Pattie kept them apart; they would have been a beautiful couple! :D

Was Lennon even there when George brought in Clapton for "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"?
George and Clapton would have made a prettier couple than George and Ron Wood (another British guitarist Pattie had an affair with, more like wife swapping between George and Ron, actually)

According to beatlesbible - The remake was started that same day. The Beatles recorded 28 takes; the basic track had Harrison on acoustic guitar and guide vocals, Lennon on guitar, McCartney playing piano and organ, and Starr on drums.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps was completed on 6 September. Eric Clapton, playing a Les Paul guitar, performed his guitar solo, which went uncredited on the album. During the mixing stage the solo was varispeeded to give it more of a 'Beatles sound'.

The same day also saw the addition of a distorted bass part, played by McCartney, some organ by Harrison, and percussion by Starr. Finally, Harrison taped his lead vocals, with backing harmonies from McCartney.

Clapton used the Gibson Les Paul guitar that Harrison had given him a month previously. His presence in the studio reportedly made the other Beatles more attentive and enthusiastic about the song, doubtless to Harrison's relief.

The solo replaced an earlier guitar track performed by John Lennon on the previous day. Harrison overdubbed organ and two lead vocals, Paul McCartney added vocal harmonies and a distorted bass guitar part, and Ringo Starr played tambourine and castanets.

I was always convinced the bass part on WMGGW was Lennon on the Fender Bass VI...

But based on that info, no, Lennon wasn't there when Clapton did his overdub, and apparently had his own guitar part wiped. Why am I not surprised by either of those little factoids?

Varispeed? Wasn't it just ADT effects?

Everybody may have something to hide, except John and George don't appear to be hiding anything...well either the photos are cropped or perhaps they are hiding their "monkey." :D

Interestingly the organ is going out of tune in the track sometimes, possibly through varispeed effects. Makes sense...

I wouldn't call it distorted. It just has a bit of grit in it. Similar bass tone is in Yer Blues, Helter Skelter.

It's Paul on Fender Jazz Bass.

And they copied those 4-tracks to 8-tracks too. So hetting and tracing back earliest tapes before mixdowns or copies still makes sense to do.

Definitely. They also did a fair amount of work at Trident and they used a different equipment standard at EMI which caused some issues. So going back to the original 4cand 8 tracks makes a lot of sense. Ron

The adt/flange effect on the lead guitar is most evident on the mono mix. The new stereo and surround mixes need to emulate that.
