None of the FZ vinyl reissued so far has been all-analog, but none the worse for that based on comments here (I have originals except for the Ryko We’re Only In It For The Money).

Isn’t the current Hot Rats LP just a re-pressing of the Classic Records vinyl? I thought that one was all analog.

    Many have been all analog.
Only "Freak Out", "We're Only In It For The Money" and "Uncle Meat" were cut from digital due to the Masters being in poor shape.
"Lumpy Gravy" & "Joe's Garage" were cut from Analog safety copies of the master tapes.
Everything else was cut from the Analog Masters.

"Finer Moments" was also cut from the Analog Master that Zappa compiled in 1972.

Not true. A majority of them are all-analog.

Does getting into Zappa mean getting out of Zen?

  7. He had at the very least side 3 ready by October 22, '77. I heard him DJ it at CHOM-FM, the afternoon of the 10-22 concert at the Montreal Forum.

There is a tape from Atlanta September 19 1977 (the day after his show there) where he played side 1 and "Pedro's Dowry," "The Purple Lagoon" and "Illinois Enema Bandit."

  9. ...And don't the bass player and drummer of most of side 2 of Sleep Dirt only come into the picture several months into 1976 anyway?..

  10. Thinking back upon this event, I now vividly remember Punky's Whips being aired too (from side 4). My problem is I was then at work pumping gas (!), it was a Saturday afternoon, and I could only get into the attendant cabin (with the radio inside it) on and off... A good friend of mine, now deceased, had actually taped that broadcast... I so dearly wish he would have made me a copy!

I should have shut down that damn gas station instead... They fired me a month later anyway!

Terry Bozzio joined Zappa in 1975, but you're right about Patrick O'Hearn.

Thats the key to a lot of Zappa. Just turn off your mind and go with it. There’s enough brilliant music going on behind it to keep you busy.

That’s great, I wasn’t aware. I’d bought several of the newly done CD reissues a few years ago and thought the LPs used the same sources.

I couldn't work out which 2 to start with, so went with 3 instead.

A minute into Apostrophe I knew it was exactly why I stick with vinyl, sounds absolutely stunning. CB's work on this is fantastic.

Interesting that 2 of those I ordered from a Amazon seller called "Fulfilment Express" and they look like the US versions (Pallas sticker on the front), so I will be using them again I think. I've checked the pressing of "One Size fitsa all" and CB initials are in it as well. Are the US and Euro pressing all done at the same plant, as its just the Pallas sticker for the US versions?

Apostrophe was the most expensive out of all of them at a good £4 more than the others in places.

I believe this is the case. All of the US copies I bought had the Pallas stickers.

If you are over 20 years old, you might have missed the boat on getting into Zappa, just IMO. :)

Avoid Thingfish .. start with the Mothers ... Freak Out is a great place to start... I heard Hot Rats second in 1970.. then maybe move into his great mid 70s stuff..One size fits all, Roxy, Lather, Ycdtosa vol 2.

  25. Thingfish may be the only Zappa purchase I ever regretted. Just awful stuff.
