Beggars Banquet is my favorite Stones album. But I like all their 70s albums quite a bit, Sticky Fingers included. I agree, Can't You Hear Me Knockin and Moonlight Mile are 2 of the best tracks. The other best track: Sway
Heh, George and I are acquaintances going long, long back. I'm one of the most prominent commenters there (under my real name, obviously -- easy enough to find if you Google) from back in the '90s/'00s. Wow that was forever and a day ago.
Haha - small blogosphere indeed. Starosin’s Stones writing is really, really terrific. Researched, well written and with original thought. I binge read ‘em. That said, some of his reviews on other artists he doesn’t like can seem like almost arbitrary polemics. Like Christgau, but far less pithy!
Sticky Fingers continues to be the best album by The Rolling Stones, 50 plus years running now. Period.
I add Emotional Rescue and Tattoo You to that run of albums. Love ‘em both, imperfect though they may be. I reach for both before IOR&R and Black and Blue (both of which I like). I usually regard Sticky Fingers as peak Stones, and place it (personally) ahead of Exile.
After reading the forums some years ago and then finding one of the early desired US pressings and even though the record I have has a few songs that only play VG, I listened to it last month. I really enjoyed the rockers on it. Then the sound and style of I Got The Blues tries to fit in but it also kind of sticks out a bit. I should have rephrased that. I admit I kind of started and then skipped past Sister Morphine and did the same with Dead Flowers. I can't remember if I made it through the memorable Moonlight Mile.
Sticky Fingers is as great today as it was when it was released. Still the best Stones album, among many great albums
