That's an absolutely unfair standard for anyone to live up to! No one ever looked as good in a tuxedo as Cary Grant. Not Sinatra, not Connery, not Clooney, not Marlene Dietrich, not even penguins.

Gary Cooper was glamourous when he was young “Morocco”. But .. he got old, quick.

I feel like Charlize Theron has that glamour of a movie star. She definitely commands the camera in any frame she’s in.

Unfortunately she lives in the wrong era.

I think fan adoration existed better in earlier decades least for glamour pre 1960. Probably the strongest decade was the 1930’s for fan worship .. movie magazines!!!!

To me she doesn't look glamorous at all. Recently she mostly looked angry.

I don't think there is absolutely no glamour in cinema anymore, but there is much less of it and not as well done. Styles, design, fashion were all more glamorous back then- just look at the clothes, furniture, cars, architecture, etc. Glamour was popular- the average Joe and Joan went to the cinema to escape from their everyday life and see how the other half lived.

There is a different aesthetic in cinema, now. People want realism and they want action and superheroes. It's not easy to be glamorous wearing a cape and tights while pummeling people.

I agree in some roles- also Scarlett Johansson can be glamorous.

Even Ellie Mae Clampett was glamorous.

The music they played when Ellie Mae entered a scene always cracked me up. I loved that show.

  16. Funny you should mention the music because I originally tried to find a video clip of her gracefully descending the Clampett’s staircase in an evening gown. As Ol’ Jed might’ve put it, she “cleaned up mighty good.”

I think Sharon Stone came close to reviving glamour. But with social media--forget it. Actresses want to be "relatable" and/or post dumb things that destroy any sense of mystery.

"Glamour" is subjective. It is also an interchangable term with "marketing".

I'm sure you could just as easily google a term that rhymes with "Bjorn smars", and find several acceptable images of examples who exude the same amounts of "glamor", even in the, shall we say, "conflicted nature" of their particular rung of the filmmaking industry outside of the mainstream.

Indeed, it is hard to even avoid the infinitesimal availability of beautiful images accessible these days, to give any credence to your hypothesis that somehow "glamour" is dead, either in cinema, show business, or even in the corporate world.

The era you refer to, could just as easily be described as, "when dames was dames", and have the same ring of authenticity.

I am only 64, so perhaps I am not old enough to fully-comprehend the nature of your argument. Maybe when I am older, my eyesight is gone along with my verility, and those kids are on my lawn in increasing numbers of paranoia and imagination...

To be fair, at least you included the "?" in your thread title. :edthumbs:

Audrey Hepburn & Grace Kelly are at the top of my list... it’s not just the formal beautiful dresses either. They can make the simplest outfit or situation seem glamorous. There is just something about them - the way they talk, their mannerisms, their facial expressions... it goes beyond physical beauty which they obviously have.
