I'm guessing when his mother disappeared beneath the water, he waited helplessly and finally just went to sleep

 

I've tried to figure out how Randy California (Craig Wolfe) managed to save his 12 year old son after a riptide carried them out to sea, but he himself drowned in the process. This seems very similar.
