Christmas in February! This, too, has long been high up on my wishlist, along with a no-frills edition of BRUSSELS AFFAIR—which is, in my opinion, is Their definitive live album as they had a couple years to really get one another’s idiosyncrasies and ticks down and lock themselves down as a canyon carving a$$kicking machine firing on all eight cylinders. Key with this D.E.: the huge number of outtakes which were cut in autumn 72 (Kingston) and early 73 (Rotterdam). Many of these are readily available online, but as others mentioned, clean copies must needs be issued—the Chris Kimsey treatment. Brilliant album—the fifth and final in that rollicking run from 68 to 73. Lots to love on this album as it showcases blues, ballads, and a lil’ Chuck Berry-styled rock ‘n roll. Tails continues what he starts on Side Four of EXILE, and just dominates on it, especially on“100 Years Ago,” “Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo...,” and those high-octane lead barrages on “Hide Your Love.” Mood/Vibe is more critical with this outing than many of Their albums—this ‘un has that gloriously hazy & lazy opioid vibe that comes with the afterhours party (SOUP) following the big epic ballroom bash (EXILE). That fogginess just permeates the entire album and makes the listener wonder if they’re in real time, or dreamland. In this sense, it’s a bit reminiscent of Shakey’s TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT. Favorite leftovers: - “Criss Cross Mind (Save Me)” - “Tops” (Jagger Falsetto Vocal) - “You Should’ve Seen Her Ass” - “Fast Talking Slow Walking” This kinda soup’s best when reheated. - siyt
Over at IORR it was mentioned that at one time the following songs were mentioned as candidates for a Goats Head Soup Deluxe Edition. This was not confirmed. All the Rage Save Me (Criss Cross) Scarlet Fragile Tropical Disease Separate Ways (Separately?)
Scarlet - If that would be the long rumoured Jimmy Page/Keith Richards track (of the same title), then everything is forgiven. But the Jimmy Page/Keith Richards song Scarlet is from autumn 1974 so this is most likely something different
The outtakes sound really interesting. Criss Cross Mind (Man) is one of my fav unreleased Stones cuts.
Yes, I know. It didn't stop them from adding Title 5 from the Exile On Main Street Super Deluxe Edition even though it was from the wrong time period. I guess we'll find out eventually.
I'd be quite interested to see what the outtakes would be,I've always thought it's very underrated, in fact I prefer it to Exile
I'm interested for sure. This is right up there with Undercover as far as under the radar Stones albums go for me.
GHS is the last album the Stones ever made that I really care about, so I am looking forward to this, especially if Brussels is to be included.
Definitely interested. My vinyl copy is poor, will dig the cd out tomorrow. Extra's will be nice. Always assumed their cover of Drift Away was from the GHS sessions but believe now that was from IORAR.
