I've been going through the Hulu series The Looming Tower from 2018 and think it is very well done. Starts from 1998 and goes over the intelligence failurs leading up to the 9/11 terrorist attack. Great cast, and really entertaining. And maddening.
I enjoyed “Berlin Station”, which had three seasons a few years ago. Berlin Station (TV series) - Wikipedia
Yes! The Bureau is the only spy series I think comes up to the heights of the old Tinker Tailor/Smiley's People. An unforgettable series, wonderful
It's solid. I really liked the first season, didn't care for the second, but I thought the third was mostly back on track.
I watched "The Game" with Michael Douglas and Sean Penn recently and it's a very good thriller. The Game movie review & film summary (1997) | Roger Ebert
I thoroughly enjoyed Totems on Amazon Prime. From IMBD: "In 1965, in the midst of the Cold War, a French rocket scientist is thrown in the field for a nearly impossible spy mission and falls for a Soviet woman secretly working for the KGB." The impossible mission involves a Soviet orbital nuclear bomb that is about to crash to Earth. It came out in 2021.
Excellent movie, intelligent script, great performances all-round - and yes, Mark Strong really delivers (“an exceedingly polite gentleman and a very good conversationalist”) - wonderfully directed by Ridley Scott and based on the book by journalist David Ignatius. This one merits repeat viewings.
Not a movie but you might find this article that John leCarre wrote for the New Yorker a good read. Hopefully you can access it. A Hidden Hazard of Espionage
Fascinating read, thanks. His memoir "The Pigeon Tunnel" is also excellent. A documentary with the same title has just been made too, though I've not seen it yet.
Great movie that I can go back and rewatch occasionally. I liked the book better but the movie is excellent. David Ignatius has written a lot of good books. Very interesting column in the Washington Post too last week that has a lot of people talking.
The article that @Bradd linked to, ‘The Madness of Spies A Secret Service secret. By John le Carré’ was so good, I was left wanting more. Thanks to this thread, I just found out about le Carré‘s memoir The Pigeon Tunnel. Just got the Kindle book and looking forward to diving onto it. Thanks @Bradd and @Dayfold.
I just started watching the AMC remake of The Ipcress File. I think it’s fantastic. I read the book years (and I mean years ago). I’m going to have to read it again now.
