Also in 1984, Starman with Jeff Bridges. John Carpenter major success.

    Wow!

a lot of great movies are getting trashed here.

I’ll defend Red River - Wayne’s character loves Clift like a son, and he realizes it. Same ending asThe Searchers!

2001 - Hey,it was the hippie era and even the grand curmudgeon Kubrick gave us a Starchild. Dig it, and stop being uncool!

John Woo's action masterpiece THE KILLER (Hong Kong, 1989).

The ending would be ragged if it weren't wrong-headed to begin with.

Woo's endings are usually a ridiculous mess although everything that
leads up to the endings is usually brilliant cinema.

Only reason I ever came up with was they were considered accessories to the crimes Jake & Elwood commit during the movie. Other than that them all being imprisoned makes no sense other than they wanted to end the movie with another performance by the band.

Oh goodness me we watched this last night on Prime. You won't see such a cast in such a mess very often! It's like every third scene was dumped on the cutting room floor and a few jumbled up for good measure, total nonsense for the most part. The effects were not bad though.

    "The Martian".

That wrap-up at the end where he is telling his story and giving the kids a pep talk about space exporation is totally redundant. The movie should have ended with him being rescued.

  11. I agree that the last scene was not needed (I can't remember the novel ending), but it was not really "bad" IMO.

  12. Hannibal was a pretty good adaption of the novel, until someone decided it needed a happy ending. The book's ending had guts and was disturbing, but the movie? just idiotic and pandering.

One of the things one should expect from Lynch's movies is alternate realities and general existentialism.

Well, I now have another to add to the list, “The Woman in the Window” (I refer, of course, to the 1944 film; no connection at all to the movie of the same name coming out next year). It’s one of those instances where I can’t blame the film maker. If Fritz Lang has been able to take it to the conclusion it was headed toward, it would have been a brilliant ending. Unfortunately, the times were what they were and it’s obvious that this was an ending made to appease the Hayes Code.
