Made the day sad and moody. Listened to Gordon's music.
Won't be the last day to.

    rest in peace, dear brother

I hoped someone would bring up the tremendous flat-picking and Tony Rice's devotion to Gordon's music.

I wanted to introduce it here, but you beat me to it. Between Gordon Lightfoot, Tony Rice (and John Prine - had to include him), we have a wonderful footing in folk and bluegrass music.
Tony's interpretations of Gordon's songs are sublime. Cold On The Shoulder, Bitter Green, I'll Try ... my goodness.

Don't think so, sadly. Given that Affair On Eighth Avenue is my favourite of the re-records, I would be delighted if the full album was given a proper CD re-issue.

My favourite Gord compilation is the 34 track Complete Singles 1970 - 1980, which came out in 2019.

Because it contains both sides of the 45s, there's almost the perfect mix of hits & deep cuts and you get a real sense of how his songwriting subtly changed across the decade. Highly recommended even if you own all the studio albums.

    RIP Gordon.

I'd bought several of his LPs when they were new back then. I have the 4xCD set now,
    Gordon Lightfoot - Songbook 4CD Set (1999)
which, fortunately, sounds great (only very lightly 'louded', not brickwalled).

I looked on Amazon for any DVD bio or concert film. Looks like there have been half a dozen or so, but it looked like none were in print..

There were quite a few songs missing from Complete Greatest Hits that I would consider essential... "Black Day in July", "I'm Not Sayin", "Steel Rail Blues", "Did She Mention My Name", "Song For a Winter's Night"... just to name a few.

(Those songs all appear on the Over 60 Minutes with Lightfoot comp, which i also own as a companion to the Rhino disc).

Here's a link to a New York Times article on the ten essential Gordon Lightfoot songs.

    How were they all different?
I'm sure there were plenty of songs like that on the radio.

All proceeds went to the families of those lost. Gordon attended every memorial service annually for the ship’s crew. Yesterday at 3:00P.M. In Detroit's Mariners Cathedral they rang the ships bell 30 times. 29 for the men who were lost and once for Gordon Lightfoot.

CBC ran a documentary yesterday but I only caught a few minutes of it, and of course, it was larded with commercials.

Only problem with this is that guys like Gord aren’t made, they’re born. Gord was like a fully formed songwriter right out of the gate with his first studio album. Amazing. We won’t see very many people like him again.

That documentary was incredible. Very happy I bought it when it was released. One of my favorite docs.
