I went in 1991 and I agree with you. The setting was amazing. Jerry started the second song of the first set at twenty minutes after four. Intentional or just happened that way? My friends buddy pointed that out at the time. I do remember it being cooking hot that day and I also remember saying after the show that Twilight was my favorite of the day. The Eel River show started a most excellent two weeks of music and fun. I wish I had gone in 1989 and the 1987 show has always been a favorite to listen to. 08/10/91, Jerry Garcia Band, Eel River 08/12/91, Grateful Dead, Cal Expo 08/13/91, Grateful Dead, Cal Expo 08/14/91, Grateful Dead, Cal Expo 08/16/91, Grateful Dead, Shoreline 08/17/91, Grateful Dead, Shoreline 08/18/91, Grateful Dead, Shoreline 08/24/91, Jerry Garcia Band, Squaw Valley 08/25/91, Garcia And Grisman
As I've stated many times here before, this set was a relevation and might be my overall favorite of the series.
I was just going to say that this may be the best show they've released so far (although 3-1-80 is certainly up there).
That period is my favorite as well, but I'm really warming to the Keith era. He really comes into his own in his JGB solos, just seems to be more freed up than with the Dead.
I started my Lunt-Fontaine Broadway revisit last night. Played Broadway Act One. Tonight when I get done with the day’s chores I will revisit all the Broadway material issued in the first Jerry series. Jerry’s enthusiasm was infectious. I wish I had taken the time to attend some of those shows at the time.
The question will be do they even own it/have the tapes. Someone (on this thread I think) posted something where they or some reporter had asked about Reconstruction and basically was told 'that's Linda Kahn's, we don't have that,' whether that means the rights or the tapes, it seems they've punted. The same is true for the Keith and Donna album (which at least was released on Round initially so Garcia was the label president as well as playing on every track.) I'd love some GASB also, and I think there's a market for that given the names involved, but given what they've put out and the stuff they've declined to get into, (ie, everything on the label that Garcia owned that wasn't explicitly under his name,) I'm not holding my breath that Garcia Family will put that out soon. Agitating with Grisman may be more productive as far as that goes.
That sucks. She provided a lot of happiness. Tonight's listening will be some JGB in remembrance of those good times and sweet vocals.
Indeed, I can remover the first time I saw JGB and when those back up vocal kicked in it was like the skies parted and the sun came shining down. Lots of soul and beauty.
I had to get back to the east coast and couldn’t stick around for those last two shows, but was at all of the rest. Quite a good run of shows.
Yes I posted quite awhile back about Reconstruction and the legal impediment. I hope not a similar problem with the String Band
