Agree completely regarding the Byrds. Among my favorite ever Dylan covers. Hell, one of my favorite ever covers, period:
I love that song, and that version! It's one I never thought about the Dead covering, but I think it would've been a great Weir tune. It was also the first song Dylan played the first time I saw him, in 1998, which was extremely cool and not at all what my 16-year-old self would've expected.
Inspired by this thread and thinking what to play last night after the long week of mourning I played disc 1 of Garcia sings Dylan (that might be the wrong title). Some long old versions but a really nice listen. The Tough Mama was great. I enjoyed the Positively 4th Street but never really associate Jerry with singing nasty/mean spirited songs! Despite the book sort of warning of lesser fidelity recordings in some cases I thought the whole disc was terrific sound wise.
Side Trips: Volume 1. by Garcia/Wales might be one of my favorite Jerry side projects of all time. My all time fav's change frequently, but as of right now, this one is up there.
Wish the vinyl wasn’t so limited. Would’ve liked to have picked this one up. It’s quite the Garcia solo curio
I am having some serious fun spinning this studio album this morning-the supplemented CD version from “”All Good Things”, box. I had an overwhelming urge to hear the studio version of “Catfish John”, and like potato chips…….( Edit: this CD contains the in studio jam “Orpheus” with Dead).
I held out on that because of the 'mastered from CD' talk, but I'm so happy I grabbed it, as it sounds incredibly good.
Partial Set: Friend Of The Devil I've Been All Around This World Rosalie McFall Ripple Jerry Garcia - guitar, vocals John Kahn - bass Sandy Rothman - mandolin, dobro, banjo, vocals David Nelson - guitar, vocals
It's the same mastering / digital master so it's mostly a matter of my gear. When the band pushes and things get hot you can hear the tube pre-amp vs DAC and I prefer the tube pre... otherwise pretty close.
I didn't expect it to sound a lot different, and was very surprised how warm and 'analog' sounding the vinyl set is. Well worth getting while the price is still low.
Tonight I'm listening to highlights from the third show of the Electric on the Eel box, 1991-08-10, currently playing "Shining Star". Such a great show!
After some Emil Gilels rarities earlier this morning-I am now listening to Reconstruction, 03/07/1979, recording from the KPFA broadcast from the Rancho Nicasio show at San Rafael. I much prefer Jerry’s playing style here to some of his GD 79 playing.
