“Welcome to the unique, enduring phenomenon of the Grateful Dead in New York City, a mutual devotion, forged in concert, that ran for nearly as long as the band itself—from June 1, 1967, a free show in Tompkins Square Park on the Lower East Side (ahead of the band’s official, local bow at the Cafe Au Go Go), to the Dead’s last Garden run, six nights in October 1994…the Dead’s affinity for New York City…was instant and arguably their most profound with any city aside from San Francisco.” - David Fricke

They got on the bus to the Port Authority, rode in on the Long Island Railroad and the New Jersey Transit line. They traveled North, South, and West on the 1, 2, and 3 subway lines, their numbers growing as they descended upon Penn Station. Some rolled up in those iconic New York yellows. Some walked excitedly through the bright lights of Broadway and Times Square, meeting up with old friends on the way and picking up a few new ones too as they ascended The Garden's stairs. Maybe you were among them - lightly buzzed on the way in, fully aglow on the way home. New York City was in its prime and damn if the Grateful Dead wasn't going to rise up to meet it! If you were there, we call on you to join us as we recapture that MSG magic and if you weren't, we invite you along on the epic journey that is IN AND OUT OF THE GARDEN: MADISON SQUARE GARDEN '81 '82 '83.

Numbered and limited-edition to 12,500, this 17CD set celebrates the band’s rich history at “the world’s most famous arena,” introducing six previously unreleased shows recorded at MSG between 1981 and 1983. It offers a front-row seat to the Dead in the early 1980s, an overlooked and underestimated era of rebirth for the band. At the time of the recordings, the group featured Brent Mydland. Mydland’s vocal power and colorful keyboard palette energized the band, invigorating older material like “The Wheel,” “Truckin’” and “Eyes of The World.” He also gave the band more musical flexibility, which encouraged them to dust off rarely aired treasures like “Dupree’s Diamond Blues” and “Crazy Fingers.”

IN AND OUT OF THE GARDEN touches on the three-year period after 1980’s GO TO HEAVEN was released, a time when the Dead were constantly on the road, playing more than 200 dates. While they were in no rush to return to the studio during this time, they continued to write new music. In 1982 and ’83, the band performed most of the songs that would appear on 1987’s IN THE DARK. The new collection includes performances of four songs from that album – “Touch Of Grey,” “Hell In A Bucket,” “Throwing Stones,” and “West L.A. Fadeaway” – plus the B-side, “My Brother Esau.”

Due September 23rd, IN AND OUT OF THE GARDEN comes in a custom box featuring new artwork by Dave Van Patten celebrating the band’s eclectic fanbase, with a cavalcade of illustrated Dead Heads. The collection also includes detailed liner notes by award-winning music journalist David Fricke, who explores the band’s connection to the Big Apple. It features newly restored and speed-corrected audio by Plangent Processes, mastered by Jeffrey Norman.

Except for what's been released as Dick's and Dave's Picks, I'm pretty unfamiliar with most '80s Dead, so I'm very excited about diving deep into these MSG shows and getting fully Brent-ed.

Surprised there isn't a break out show on vinyl, or even a compilation like PNW and Spring 1990. Also surprised they aren't juicing this with a merch collection.

Absolutely can not wait for the Deadcast season that goes with this box set. JJ is going to take us on a hell of an adventure.

A quick comparison between the Listening Party and the Archive shows a clear sound quality upgrade, imo. Usually I am pretty pessimistic about cassette transfers and their value in an official release, but the 3/9 and 3/10/81 shows sound good - although of course not nearly as good as reels.

Maybe thinking vinyl purists won't be interested in a cassette sourced recording?

Didn’t see it listed but is the FLAC download 24/96 and the ALAC 16/44?

  15. I’m torn. I own every live archival release. I’m hitting saturation point with my music collection. My GD collection takes a couple of years to get through, listening pretty regularly in chronological order. Never mind everything else I listen to - some of whom have huge discographies too. On top of that, after my first two Dead & Company shows (Wrigley), I want to devote more of my listening and money to hearing and seeing them while they last. This could be where I jump off. It’s daunting, as a completionist to pass on something- we’ll see if I hold out …

We need a support group for us "completionists" who are wavering. 200+ bucks for cassettes? No way. This is where I draw the line. I hope it sells out real fast though or I'll probably end up buying the darn thing. I'm hopeless.

I'm with you. I did pull the trigger but may cancel and downsize the digital only or just breakout show. Sometimes Brent's keyboards in early 80's just don't sit well w/me (which begs question of why I'd spend $200 on 17cds worth of it). That being said, I do enjoy collecting GD music and I don't have much early 80's. That's the back and forth in my head in the coming days/weeks!

Great, great stuff here!! Very excited to see some love for 1981 as it's one of my favorite years!! Both of these '81 shows are good. As a matter of fact all of these are pretty thick, meaty shows. The 2nd sets from these years still had some meat on them and took their time. Good variety of songs on this release even though there are repeats. Nice to see an electric Deep Elem. All the late era " Jam" songs are here. Yup.... just a lot of Good Ol Grateful Dead music in this one. Very affordable too!

They should be matrixing early 80s shows given how great some of the AUDs are. So odd they did this with Dave’s Picks 8 and then never again. Happy to see these were Plangented though.

You shouldn’t be surprised re: a compilation set. They haven’t done that since PNW. That box took years to sell partly because the comp cd of the best material was a cheaper option. They want you to buy the box.

I feel like the very lovely but also very oversized packaging was the more likely culprit here.

Sorry for the cross post, just thought I’d share this here in the appropriate thread (was a reply on the DaP2022 page).

I was at all of these MSG shows. The two from 81 are excellent, both have remained favorites for many years. They certainly are in the top 40 shows I saw, maybe the top 25.

The 82 run I remember the least, though I listened within the last year and was very favorably impressed.

The 83 run is best known for the St. Stephen bust out night one (I never heard a louder ovation in the Garden!) but if anything I think I prefer night two which was the first ever Revolution, and a great HSF. Some very solid early 80s GD.

Decent looking run of shows, I've only ever heard 10/11/83 thanks to the return of St Stephen, so I'm happy to get more from an underrepresented era.

But sincerely hoping that the $70 for international shipping to the UK is meant to cover customs charges as well as the actual shipping cost. If it does, great, that's usually what it winds up being and saves a trip to the post office to pick it up after paying the charges online. If not, well, this might be the end of buying physical product in the name of digital downloads. Thank goodness the 10% off code works on this one.

Light Into Ashes vinyl set was a great way to do a breakout release in the format. I don’t think FOH cassettes make any sense on vinyl though.
