    Donna Godchaux-Contributions to other artist’s recordings;

    from deaddisc.com;

    Before joining the Dead, Donna Jean was a respected session singer firstly in the Muscle Shoals, Memphis and Nashville area and subsequently on the West Coast. This aspect of the discography has only been superficially explored to date.
    Before joining the Grateful Dead Donna Jean Godchaux (Donna Jean Thatcher) worked as a backing singer on many recordings. Her first recording session was with Ray Stevens probably in early 1966. In addition to the artists listed below she also recorded with Solomon Burke, Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, Joe Tex, Joe Simon, Benny King, Neil Diamond, Dionne Warwick, the Boxtops, and others. There are, no doubt, also other recordings with some of the artists listed below that are not documented here. This section of the discography is far from complete. Italics indicate that it is not known if Donna contributed to the track.

  6. What did Garcia do on Manassas, do you know? He's not listed on the album credits.....

    From JerryGarcia'sMiddleFinger.......

    http://jgmf.blogspot.com/2010/01/garcia-on-stephen-stills-albums.html

    Regarding Manassas, deaddisc has recently included this Garcia quote from the Swing 51 article, though indicating that things are still uncertain: "There are a couple of tunes on there where I play pedal steel and maybe even guitar on one, but there's at least two that I'm not credited on. But I did the sessions and it's me playing." Silberman is much more enthusiastic about this possibility, suggesting that has been previously unknown. He also reports that while Al Perkins probably did most of the (and arguably the finest) steel work on Manassas, the style suggests that Jerry might well be playing on "Jesus Gave Away Love For Free."

    I was just listening to Cow Palace New Year's Eve 1976 last night and marveling at what a fantastic, and somewhat frustrating, release it is. The sound is, at least to me, fantastic! Everyone is crystal clear and Jerry really seems to be on. Phil sounds wonderful as well with a very clear and articulate sound.

    Disc 2 really takes off with a wonderful and quickly paced Eyes that turns into the most perfect version of Wharf Rat ever. Seriously, they nail the harmonies, the tempo, and the jam all in perfect unison with each other. Then we get a pretty killer Good Lovin which is a song I normally don't care for. But they turn in a very nice jam in the middle and then drag out the end into a very funky Samson intro. THEN they still have the audacity to go into a nice bouncy Scarlet with a beautiful jam that has all the time in the world.

    But the frustrating part about this release is the set list. Disc 1 starts off well enough with a nice lazy Bertha (I always disregard Promised Land) but the rest of the disc just seems lacking except for the Playing which does have a nice out there jam. But I just don't find myself reaching for disc 1 very often.

    Then over on disc 3 we get a very well played Help that just drops off into space with Slipknot and then not even a treat of Franklin's. I would have loved to have heard a nice 76 Franklin's in this sound quality. There is a decent drums followed by a NFA that doesn't really go anywhere although I like it anyways. There is of course what most people call a monster Morning Dew although I don't think I've ever been able to sit through it. I couldn't tell you how the Saturday Night and UJB go because I never really gave them attentive listens after trying to get through all of disc 3.

    In the end, it IS a great release although I'm not sure I would recommend it to a newbie.

    The New Years 76 show was their first gig in over two months, and reportedly their only practice was a brief soundcheck. That might explain why the first set is a slow starter. One of my favorite Playing jams.

    There have been plenty of times where the Dead played a slow first set. I just attribute it to them getting the feel of the audience (and each other) before ripping it up in the second set.

    Another argument for the whole show release concept. The whole is greater than the parts. On these nights, you can hear the band slowly build up steam as the show goes forward.

    a ton of info in this thread....the effort is much appreciated, even by those of us just now "discovering" The Grateful Dead....

    tiny slightly off-topic question (or two):

    - Workingman's Dead originally issued on CD in 87 on Warner 2-1889 -> how can I identify the 1st US issue? matrix code? made in Japan? etc....

    - same question for American Beauty issued on CD in 87 on Warner 2-1893

    Was there an earlier CD issuance in Europe or Japan? Catalog info would be helpful. I'd like to track down the definitive pressing of these 2 for sound quality.

    Many thanks!!

    As far as I know the first CDs of those albums were the 1987 releases mentioning that the mastering was "approved by the Grateful Dead."

    i was just noticing something regarding these archive releases. in the 'golden' years from 68-74, i think that 1970 isn't as well covered as the other years. after may of 1970, there's only a handful of songs released but many of the shows from june through december were amazing. i think part of the problem is not all of the shows were recorded from the sb or exist in the vaults. i believe that's the case with most of the port chester shows. the 9/70 fillmore east shows were recorded from the sb but don't circulate complete.

    True, there are few soundboards from June until late December 1970. Bear has said that this was because he was in jail, and he had been doing much of their taping up to then. There are other theories that there were tapes that never made it into the Dead's vault or were stolen. The September 1970 Fillmore boards came from a non-vault source.

    true. i didn't think about him. there's a few others; stonybrook university, el monte, santa rosa, anderson theater. i don't know if they would be considered good enough to be released but you never know.

    Appendix II; The Ones That Got Away

    When you find out, let me know. LOL.
    -------------------------------------------

    Grateful Dead Merchandising/Rhino have been releasing Archive Recordings very regularly in recent years (lucky for us; more to hear and chat about on SHF!). During the course of the preceding thread we were lucky enough to have a few released just before we passed through that era or year, and we were able to include those.

    However, they’re still coming so I’ll add them here when they pass the rumor/order stage and cross-reference them with their existing SHF thread (you guys spot and post them well before I hear of them), and to the post in this thread to give some perspective of that show’s ‘life & times’. As usual, I’ll respectfully include data as compiled by those wonderfully thorough guys at deaddisc.com.

    Let It Rock: Jerry Garcia Band, Keystone Berkeley Nov 17/18 1975

    This cd had only just passed the rumor status when we had the JGB Reflections post #616. This is a great chance to hear live this very early and short-lived incarnation of the Jerry Garcia Band featuring Nicky Hopkins on keyboards. This was a shift in dynamics (Hopkins’ piano as opposed to Saunders’ organ), …and as if the music isn’t cool enough, this archive release is recorded in 16-tracks to boot.

    It’s got it’s own SHF thread here;

    Road Trips: Volume 3, Number 2-November 15, 1971

    This Road Trips would correspond with post #416 of this thread of the very early Keith Godchaux tenure with the band (Pig Pen was going and coming during this time due to illness). This release is chockfull of ‘cowboy’ tunes (all the more enjoyable being n Texas), but this certainly doesn’t mean they can’t drop some Dark Star mojo into the brew.

    Crimson, White and Indigo- July 7, 1989 JFK Stadium, Philadelphia

    This cd/dvd release comes from late in Brent Mydland’s tenure with the band and would correspond with posts #791 & #792 of this thread. Just days after the “Truckin’ To Buffalo” gig and in the era of “Without A Net”, they’re playing masterfully (dig an interesting pairing of “Estimated Prophet” into “Standing On The Moon”). Multi-track recording and a 5.1 mix to boot.

    The SHF thread for this one is here:

    Road Trips: Vol 3, Number 3: Fillmore East, 5/15/70

    Here’s the existing SHF thread on this one;

    http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=219222&highlight=grateful+dead

    This Road Trips would be added to post #270 (where this set’s “Easy Wind” already appears), just a dozen days after DP8 at Harpur College. Whereas Bear’s Choice/DP4 (from Feb 13/14 1970) and DP8 give us a great taste of the Spring acoustic sets, this latest Road Trips installment truly showcases the extent and diversity of those acoustic sets. There are a number of cover tunes including the gospel “Cool Jordan”, the folk “Ballad Of Casey Jones”, and C&W “Long Black Limousine” and “Silver Threads And Silver Needles”. Pigpen does a rare double blooze-twinner of “She’s Mine” and “Katie Mae”. Nestled amongst this celebration of roots are the Grateful Dead’s own new contributions to the genre like “Friend Of The Devil” and “Uncle John’s Band”, which would one day also be considered American folk classics in their own right.

    The release is touted as coinciding with the 40th anniversary of Workingman’s Dead. This archive tape’s crisp vocals are very up front in the mix as some of the electric guitar sound bypassed the PA straight to the hall, and as a result it sounds not unlike the Workingman’s Dead mix. While much of the acoustic sets sound very informal and ragged like old miners sitting singing around a campfire, I was personally impressed by the intricate and tight phrasing (and pitchy little harmony tricks) of the bonus disc’s “Candyman” and “Attics Of My Life”. (This is the first 3-disc RT, but I can’t help feeling that this bonus disc should’ve been a permanent 4th disc in the set.)

    This tour (the first of a few) also included a middle set by tour-mates New Riders Of The Purple Sage, with some NRPS guesting with GD, and vice versa. It’s been rightly noted in the SHF thread that a disc of NRPS would’ve also been welcome to present a more accurate picture of the marathon “An Evening With…” sets in those days.

    Although the folkie acoustic sets early in those evenings may have initially caused great concern among the older die-hard psychedelic GD fans, you’ll note that the good ol’ Grateful Dead eventually get around to cracking out the mind-phook with “Dark Star”, “St Stephen”, “Cryptical Envelopement/The Other One”, “Morning Dew”, and “Cosmic Charlie”.

    Though these were not their most mind-blowing shows, savor them. The guitarists soon decided that it was too difficult or distracting to switch back and forth between acoustic and electric mindsets, so the acoustic sets soon fell by the wayside. It would be a decade before they attempted another acoustic run in earnest.

    Grateful Dead - The Warner Bros. Studio Albums Vinyl Box (Exclusive Edition)

    I studiously avoided compilations, best of's, and re-issues in this thread as I felt they were redundant and confusing, and frankly they don't really click out of context IMO.
    However, this latest vinyl offering from Warner Bros of the GD core studio WB albums looks very tasty (especially this being an audiophile website 'n all), and has the tantalizing inclusion of the long-thought-lost original mix of AoXoMoXoA.

    The SHF thread on this, including reviews can be found here;

    http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=222955&highlight=grateful+dead

    Between 1967 and 1970, the Grateful Dead recorded five studio albums for Warner Bros. Records that formed the psychedelic canon on which the band’s live legend was built.

    Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty with THE WARNER BROS. STUDIO ALBUMS, a five-LP boxed set. The collection contains The Grateful Dead (1967),Workingman’s Dead, the original mix of Aoxomoxoa (1969), and American Beauty (1970), plus the original mix for Anthem Of The Sun (1968), available on vinyl for the first time in nearly 40 years.

    The set also offers detailed replicas of the original albums housed in a hard-shell case that protects and stores the music with the accompanying 12" x 12" book including unpublished photos and new liner notes by Blair Jackson. To ensure the highest degree of quality, the albums were pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI using lacquers cut from the original analog masters by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering.

    DEAD.NET EXCLUSIVE
    Order from Dead.net and you'll receive an exclusive reproduction of a rare 1968 7" single (in a picture sleeve) that features the studio version of “Dark Star” (b/w “Born Cross-Eyed”) that clocks in at a concise 2:38. You'll also receive a reproduction of a rare 1967 promotional poster for the first album from the Warner Bros. Records archive.(see post #142)

    Now available for PRE-ORDER ONLY. Item is estimated to ship September 21, 2010.

    JUST ASK MIKE! Overview and Reviews of the GD Archive Releases.

    Good ol' MikeP5877 is SHF's long term 'go-to' reference for ratings of the various GD Live Vault releases over the years (even the # in his handle is a reference to a particularly tasty show!)

    This album-by-album thread was partially inspired by those threads, with an aim towards providing a chronological/historical perspective to this mountain of music. Sometimes responses to some releases in this thread were a bit sparse as much of that ground was already covered in his threads.
    SO, if you're poking around the lists, paralysed by the numerous choices and wondering which releases are recommended and why, just remember; "..one watch by night, one watch by day, if you get confused....just ask Mike!".
