There are a few clams, but the overall vibe was supreme mastery.

Revisiting this set of music today. What a terrific, terrific release for the band. Want a quick shot...try the Cassidy from the 5/7/77 Boston show.

That drum section on 5/7/77!!! Wow!! Those guys were fired up!!! How the band ever got them to come down for the intro to The Wheel I’ll probably never know. I’ll just compare it to someone standing on the tracks and stopping a train going full speed.

CAUTION! Do NOT stand on tracks!!

    Fired up!! Manic energy!!!

I made a comment like this earlier in the day relative to the Dead's playing in '77, I wrote "have some coke and a smile," but then I erased it.

I really like 77 for many reasons, many of which relate to my having gone to a fair amount of Bay Area shows in that time frame.

I was a "kid" in 73....but now that I can hear shows from that time period I sure wish I could have been there also.

I really wish this set would have come with digipacks, jewel cases or whatever that would fit with the rest of my cds. I end up not going for it as much since I forget it’s there half the time. Good problems to have, I suppose.

Anyways, 5/5 was new to me with this set. Man what a super Sugaree and beautiful Peggy-O.

Colorful slim-lines would work fine for this set in your collection on CD rack.

I find this problem with big lavish box sets. For me my music needs to be quick as easily accessible otherwise it gets forgotten.

  12. This. And for every single box set without jewel cases. I label them on the spine too and on the shelf they go.

Those colorful slimline cd cases work great for this, can use a different color for each show.

That’s a great tip on the slim cases, guys. Keeps the actual cases that came with it nice too. I’m always afraid of snapping one of the thinner pieces of it. Thing looks great but flimsy.

Giving 5/5/77 a spin today in the HDCD decoding Toshiba SD-6200.

Lovely sounding show. I’ve read quite often this is peoples favorite show from the Get Shown The Light boxset. I’ve not done a conscious comparison of this Scarlet > Fire to the one in 5/8/77. That would be fun.

    Set 1:
    Promised Land
    Sugaree
    Mama Tried
    El Paso
    Tennessee Jed
    Looks Like Rain
    Deal

    Estimated Prophet
    Scarlet Begonias
    Fire On The Mountain

Aside from HDTracks marking the price up, is there any difference in their $58.98 for the 192/24 versus Dead.net's $24.99 for the FLAC (no details as to resolution). Even the 96/24 from HDTracks is a good $43 ... thanks in advance!

Dead.net looks like it would be 16/44 at that price. Look again, they are usually good about differentiating resolutions for downloads.

I can't say for sure as it seems they are leaving out resolution details on a number of downloads lately (they used to be really good about listing those) but if this release is anything to go by...

Pacific Northwest ’73-’74: Believe It If You Need It (3CD)

...then ALAC is 44/16 and FLAC is 192/24 (at least in this specific case).

Given the price difference though, FLAC would have to be Hi-Res of some sort anyway. Can't see any other reason for it costing more if it isn't. Still, dead.net should make it a point to list this information for every download, so people can be sure what they are getting.

Thank you (and US Blues above). I may email Dead net and confirm. If I had to make an educated guess, you are correct with those numbers.

a quick perusal of the 'Community' section on Dead net has some mentions about download issues due (it seems) to the 5.4 Gig FLAC, which suggests it is indeed in hi res of al least 96/24, and possibly 192/24.
