    Only song I really needed to include that I didn’t was Scarlet Begonias. Maybe also Mr. Charlie or even Easy Wind:)

    I boogied down with 4/2/73 HCS onward for a spell, what a great meltdown jam afterwards (did that one make the contest?), tight little Bobby McGee then WRS tee up for a quality Eyes. This show no doubt became a top fiver for me ever since its DaP release.

    If I really look inward and choose one song on its lyrical merits, I'd choose I've Been All Around This World. It's the complete antithesis of most music I listen to, but I love Jerry's delivery. Here's an excellent website devoted to the traditional history of that song: “I’ve Been All Around This World” ~History, Lyrics & Banjo Tab | Native Ground

    There's a verse that our boys didn't use that's published on that fine website, and I hope that this acknowledgement will be sufficient to allow fair use here*:

    Bring to me my supper boys, I’ll eat ‘er done or raw
    Bring to me my supper boys, I’ll eat ‘er done or raw
    For I haven’t had a square meal since I left Arkansas
    I’ve been all around this world

    I'd have liked to hear Jerry sing that one.

    As do I. :cool:

    Outside of the song concept, compare/contrast the Dark Stars from 3/23/72 and 9/21/72:
    • 9/21/72 (DP 36) - what congeals at 30:40 is a hootenanny to my ears;
    • 3/23/72 (NYAoM bonus disc) - as for a hoedown, look no further than the below starting at ~16:10 (Jerry engages at 16:31) - that's a GoGD hoedown, IMO.

    The difference between a hootenanny and a hoedown is that at a hoedown, the women exhibit propriety. At a hootenanny, all bets are off. Extrapolate as needed in a musical context.

    There’s always talk this time of year about a strong first pick to encourage subscribers for the year, but in what universe is anyone worried about the subscriptions not selling out?

    I think perhaps a more accurate and incisive differentiation would be as follows...

    Hoedown... [IMG]

    Hootenanny... [IMG]

    Coincidentally, I am currently being punished for my smart@ssedness. Because the entire time I was constructing the cuttingly sarcastic post above, Scarlet Begonias just finished and I've been FORCED to listen to Mexicali Blues while I've been typing all this!!! :yikes:

    I like the modesty of your box set prediction. At that size they could do TWO boxes -- one of them could be a Brent box. I don't see them using a 77 show as subscription bait for the second year in a row, but if I'm wrong and we get another May 77 show to add to the mix, I won't complain.
