Grateful Dead - favorite photos of the band

that is bobby on bass, correct? what was the story there?

 

The creepiest thing about this pic is Mickey with the knife!

 

The band was billed as Jerry Garcia and Friends, so it’s possible that Phil was not there that day. From jerrygarcia.com (which says the correct date of the photos is 2/15/68):

"Band members from various San Francisco bands including The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, The Charlatans and Country Joe & The Fish perform on a flatbed truck in the afternoon outside the prison in support of a planned strike by the inmates. It seems that the planned strike never actually took place. This show is often misdated as 03/07/68."

 

I'm guessing 15 May 1970- Fillmore East. The clenched fists were painted on the bass drums after the Kent State Massacre.

PS- 50 years after Kent State and we're still dealing with the same BS consciousness from our "leaders."

Terrapin Station was recorded in Cali. That is the band onstage for a sound check.

 

The clean shaven garcia is a giveaway too.

 

I was thinking maybe Jer and Dylan were getting a laugh over exactly that. Can just imagine Jerry raising an eyebrow ever so slightly, with an almost imperceptible nod of his head toward Phil.

Phil was just being true to himself, Dad trying to beat the heat and prevent his right arm from chafing. Dylan was a 46 year-old Dad sporting a frizzy 'fro, wearing fingerless leather gloves and matching vest over a shiny red tanktop with Jim Morrison pants, when you know he was sweating balls. And is that a dog tag or a medallion hanging from his neck? I get that he was dressing for the job that he wanted, still, but did the getup really still suit him?

 

At least he's not as horrific as seeing Jerry in shorts!
