So how does Dave's Picks 28 compare to the shows in the boxset? Did they pick a standout date from the run?
It’s one of the shows where they played Help>Slip>Frank, which gives it a boost in my book, and they seemed to have picked up some of that NY energy since leaving Boston. I played it last week after going through the Beacon shows; it would’ve fit in the box just fine.
It was a very consistent week so I’m not sure any show is the standout. I definitely wouldn’t argue that DP28 was the best.
These Betty soundboards never cease to amaze me. I am use to listening to Zeppelin and Elvis Presley soundboards and for the most part, they are sterile and imbalanced. These soundboards are as good and sometimes better than what bands produce via multi-track for official release. I guess this is the difference between someone plugging into the board for reference quality only vs. someone who actually intended to record the band in the best quality possible.
I can't dig it up at the moment but I think I remember that around '76 Betty would set up in a side room somewhere in the building and mix using speakers at least partially I suppose if in combination with headphones. I think later she came out into the room to mix out there presumably with headphones exclusively. She had splits off the mic feeds before ever getting to the console so as you say it was about the best possible setup you could have to then mix that to a Nagra IV-S deck using the Nagra Master EQ curve to mostly Ampex 406/407 7”reels at 7.5ips.
My guess is that they picked 6/17/76 because it was already in the vault before the ABCD deal, wasn't a show "everybody already had" and was well recorded.
6/18/76 was actually the first officially released June 76 show. It came out as Download Series Volume 4 in 2005. Grateful Dead Family Discography: Grateful Dead Download Series Volume 4: 6/18/1976
My boxset finally showed up on Saturday. here in Germany. I had to pay 26,85 Euro at the Post Office. No order took longer than this one.

Mine too, since March 29 still in LA [Your item was processed through our LOS ANGELES CA INTERNATIONAL DISTRIBUTION CENTER facility on March 29, 2020]. at 8:12 pm. The item is currently in transit to the destination. While dead net offered refund/replacement, they changed their mind today and wrote me I have to wait 6 business weeks after shipment...
It's the only one I have, but I keep on spinning it. Growing urge to get the other Beacon now for a nice pair (sigh). Maybe the new Dave's & bonus will stave that off.
Yeah 14th&15th make a great pair... I just ordered that deluxe Dead comic book with the LP of 08/21/68 2nd set at Fillmore West for more to stay home and play Dead.
I think 6/10, 6/14, and 6/19 are running neck-and-neck. Which may just indicate that I favor shows when they played Franklin's Tower and a Playin' jam.
Hallo out there! Is someone of you still waiting for Daves Picks 33 (Dekalb 1977)? Some time ago I‘ve got a second one! I‘d like to give it to someone in Italy, Spain, France, Greece of England. ‚Just a little light‘ in these dark corona times. Send me a note, just name and adress. Stay healthy!
Oh I‘m sorry, it is Daves Picks 32 from Philadelphia 1973! My mistake, but you can get it of you want!
The sonics on that box are just wonderfull. I think this is Betty's masterpiece. Her recordings are always top, but this time it's just unbeleivable if you consider the technic equipment that was available in the seventies. In my opionion she has to win a grammy for her recording skills - more than anybody else.
If I can offer some advice, assuming this is USPS. Fill out one of those contact help forms on their website. I had a package sitting in limbo exactly like this for almost six weeks with no updates. I filled out the contact form and got a very unhelpful email back about 24 hours later saying there was nothing they could do but confirming again it was "in transit". I was discouraged, BUT, somehow it shook something loose because the tracking updated magically later that day and the item showed up in my mailbox two days after that.
Finally after 40 days, it moved today. It is now in Chicago: "May 5, 2020, 12:36 pm Processed Through Regional Facility CHICAGO IL INTERNATIONAL DISTRIBUTION CENTER Your item was processed through our CHICAGO IL INTERNATIONAL DISTRIBUTION CENTER facility on May 5, 2020 at 12:36 pm. I said if my PayPal account got to $500 I'd buy this. It's at $499.94 right now after selling a nice silver Cream Wheels of Fire last night...
