Early in 1973 this is the case. By October Kidd had begun recording and he mixed the drums as if we are in the 1st row, dead center in front of Billy.
Rhino has this box set on sale for $152 along with free shipping. Only a few hours left to their 4th of July sale. I finally took the plunge.
You likely won't regret it. Some seriously great playing, albeit scattered among the discs. There are dense chunks of greatness and some more sporadic chunks of greatness, but those are interspersed with generous segments of very goodness. In short, this is the best release since E'72.
Re the Northwest cd box. Lovely package but not easy to store. Spare bedroom filling up with box sets. I have not picked up the vinyl edition yet. Hard to keep up with all the releases. I find the Dead net site a bit hard to navigate. Anyone know a good site listing each show and then giving details if it or part of the show has had an official release ie Dicks Picks, Dave Picks etc.
I just got my set about five days ago so I haven’t had time to listen to it all yet. The packaging is superb. I have skipped around a bit... Disc 13... Truckin’ into Nobody’s Fault But Mine is friggin awesome!!!
The entire six show box set is spectacular and I also think it is the best release since the E72 twenty-six show box set. My only quibble is that the vocals on the first set of 5/19/74 are very low in the mix of disc one. The shows back then included outrageously jammy sections that are delightful to uncover, experience and enjoy.
It really is odd. Seems like that big of a mistake has to be a giant oversight and not a deliberate choice, right?
The Portland show was the “famous” one from the PNW box. It was disappointing that the vocals couldn’t be recovered, but it was deliberately chosen despite the flaws in the first set recording.
Being a PDX Native, i have to give Seattle the brace in this box. Should revisit in order to to confirm.
I got a big 26 hour road trip starting tomorrow. My mom is celebrating her 80th birthday by going to a Godsmack concert in Connecticut. My brother plays guitar in the band, so we are treating it like a family reunion. I'm excited to see my sisters and brother and mom. Can't say I'm looking forward to the drive, but I have June 1974 on tap to push me through.
Suppose that makes a bit more sense but given how much a show on vinyl costs, not that much more sense.
I’m not sure how much any Dead show makes “sense” on vinyl. I don’t even have a functioning turntable anymore, but even the fades on some of the CD changes bug me when I listen to my rips. Changing sides every 20 minutes would prevent me from listening to these shows. I’m glad the product exists for those who disagree.
