Hmm. Pretty huge topic. “Best” is always tough. I’ll just throw this out there... Carl Kress & Dick McDonough, “Heat Wave.” Tomorrow I could have a different answer.

And one should not overlook in the vein of Reinhardt/Grapelli, Eddie Lang and Joe Venteri. As well as the work of artists including: Andres Segovia, David Russell, Julian Bream, John Williams, Bert Jansch, John Reborn, the great Brasilian guitarist Baden Powell, the acoustic work of Jorma Kaukonnen, the pioneering blues guitar of Robert Johnson and so many other country blues giants that followed Johnson's lead. The searing Flamenco stylings of Sabicas and Escudero and so many others that came before and after as well should not be overlooked. The history is rich and long.

It's Eric Peterson doing the rhythm guitar, but Alex Skolnick plays a very nice acoustic solo on The Ballad, not to mention that I dunno know if he was even 20 years old when they recorded the song. His electric solos on the tune ain't too bad either!

Al Stewart’s opening solo on Road To Moscow. Flying Sorcery on YOTC also has some good work.

One of my favorites, J Mascis, "Get Me". Yeah, I know, sort of acoustic, but oh so cool!
