Granted it is more of an EP, but it had some fantastic songs.

I would say The Final Cut but it's not that great.

Great compilation but it wasn’t passed off as a unique studio album. And not in the band’s lifetime. But the OP might decide otherwise.

When considering my favorite albums of all time I always put the Suspicious Mind two-fer as Elvis's best.

    The Monkees - Instant Replay

This album uses a lot of songs that were left in the can during their earlier 1966 recording sessions. Some were reworked, others were not. I like this album, but it's usually not one that's a top fave among Monkees fans.

The list of truly great albums (IMO) that fit this description is really small.

I can think of Tattoo You, Burnt Weeny Sandwich and Weasels Ripped My Flesh.

"Wah-Wah" isn't outtakes. "Wah-Wah" was a separate project recorded concurrently with "Laid", hatched by Eno and agreed with the band as a way of capturing their songwriting process at its earliest stage, their "jams". "Everybody Knows" was moved from "Wah-Wah" to "Laid" as the group thought there should be some crossover between the two but that doesn't make the rest of the album outtakes. They weren't trying to write material for "Laid" in those sessions.

Coil - Stolen And Contaminated Songs. Comprised of material recorded during the sessions for "Love's Secret Domain" and absolutely its equal (if not its superior). "Gold Is The Metal With The Broadest Shoulders is good but is comprised of material recorded during sessions for both "Scatology" and "Horse Rotorvator" so it doesn't quite meet the brief.

Well, yes and no. Portions of "Stay" and "Numb" were leftovers from the Achtung Baby studio sessions. Other parts were ideas from ZooTV tour soundchecks, and still more was written on the spot.

Joy Division's Still is pretty great, it rocks harder than their two studio albums proper and therefore more closely resembles their live shows (particularly as numerous songs on it had been part of their live sets). It seems their approach was to record everything they had written, and then pick the tracks to release on the singles/albums, which came in handy later.

The expanded set is essential IMO. Lucked into a 3lp sealed set for 18.00 a couple of years ago at a local collector's convention.

The Supremes' Where Did Our Love Go was recorded in pieces over a two-year period. Besides the title song, it contains "Come See About Me," "Baby Love," and "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes."
