Some bands are more about delivering a great sound than traditional songcraft. This is particularly true for a lot of the German bands that I love, including Can. If somebody else tried to cover one of their songs, it wouldn't be the same because the real magic happens with their performances.

Well, one fewer of those endless boring ballads would have made ‘Tattoo You’ a better album, at least.

Another alternative would be Slave which was also written during the Black & Blue sessions.

I never really thought of "Hand" as being a "trying too hard" song. The Stones had more than a few of those "let's write a Stones song!!" efforts, but "Hand" always felt organic to me!

I agree with that. Black and Blue is great in my opinion because I love all of the music on it.

But wouldn't you toss one for a correct Fingerprint File & Drift Away if push came to shove?

I wouldn't mind Drift Away but I would replace Luxury or If You Really Want To Be My Friend. Yes, I also like the speed corrected Fingerprint File as well.

Chicago III might fall into that category, where it is my favorite Chicago album, but had no blockbuster hits on it, with Lowdown and Free being the lone middling singles from it. It's best moments for me are the extended instrumental passages and the general flow of the material.

I guess Dark Side Of The Moon could be said to be an album greater than the sum of its parts.

I think Blue & Lonesome is a better example.

Sounds like you need to find a copy of John Cage's 4'33"

I am so jealous if your new to Rain Parade. I loved them and got to see them live in SF when they were putting this record out. I turned a friend on to it and his wife hated me because he played it to death when he first got it.

Well, then you’d end up with the opposite problem: a stronger ‘Black and Blue’ but an even duller ‘Tattoo You.’

Nah, there are other vault tracks which could have been used for Tattoo You. Chris Kimsey came up with a list of 20-25 tracks for the band to choose from when they were compiling Tattoo You. Some were most likely used on the Some Girls Deluxe Edition bonus disc.

I'm not even into Floyd much but I'm always happy to hear those two songs

Yeah, maybe I've heard them so much that they've lost their luster for me.

Awesome albums (probably their best overall after Dog Man Star), but no really strong singles, IMO.

"Mandocello" is a great song, though.

Chicago III may not have had any hits, but there's at least a half-dozen great songs on it.
