I don’t think it’s a great but I get the point of someone who thinks it is... ;)

What I mean about Into the Music is there are no great timeless Van classics on it like “Caravan,” “Into the Mystic,” “Domino” or “Have I Told You Lately.” If you don’t agree, well, I guess we just disagree about how good the songs are... :)

Harold Budd / Brian Eno - "The Pearl". It's got 11 tracks and I couldn't care less about them individually. For me, the album is one long gorgeous piece. I would never listen to one track on its own.

I put the Beach Boys’ “Friends” in that category. I love all the songs, but none jumps out as particularly great on its own. In fact, when I put together BB playlists and take the songs out of their original context, the Friends songs seem rather slight and inconspicuous—especially juxtaposed against some of the grander and more ambitious/musically adventurous songs in the BB catalogue. The album has a consistently tranquil, low-key vibe without any songs that shout “look at me.” I think the songs work best and seem more substantial in that environment. And the album is one of my absolute favorites.

Yeah, I think "Love, Reign O'er Me" and "5:15" are great songs, so I wouldn't count this one! :)

I thought of this too. But I think The Real Me is also a great song.

I would suggest that Who's Next has greater songs, but Quadrophenia is the slightly greater album because of its powerful concept.

Sure, it’s a polarizing choice for a great album, but at least we can all agree it doesn’t have any great songs ;) ...

  18. Perhaps Bad Moon Rising by Sonic Youth. Of the 8 tracks only closer "Death Valley '69" stands on its own, the others segue into each other to form semi-suites and wouldn't work very well as individual songs. Yet it adds up to one of my fave SY albums.

Probably not exactly fair to say Thick As A Brick, but no matter how they try to slice that one up with small 'segments' of the whole, it always sounds as if something's missing. Because it is.

I think the word "great" is subjective, but if I understand the spirit of the thread, I'd think about classic albums with no classic songs.

In that respect, I'd say The Notorious Byrd Brothers is a "great" album with no "great" songs. Actually I think the weakness of that album is the songwriting, at least in comparison to the previous Byrds albums; and in my opinion its greatness is more related to the psychedelic sound and production rather than the actual compositions.

I don't agree here, since I think the songwriting is the best thing of that record, full of classic songs. Now if you are referring to the performance, then we could say the same about many Dylan's albums.
