I don't think they were a direct influence, more like two bands from the same era working in similar ways but The Revillos had a similar aesthetic. They also had the very 50s/60s guitar, male and female lead vocals and trashy sounding keyboards.

Renaldo & The Loaf? Snakefinger? (Granted, Snakefinger was part of The Residents' inner circle).

Have you heard of Graham Robins? He's heavily influenced by Van Morrison: the celtic/soul touch of his songs, his look, even his record sleeve designs. He's quite good though. Not quite a carbon copy, but someone who wears his influences proudly on his sleeve (and his hat too...)

I saw "The Doors" with him fronting, and I didn't sense him imitating, but I didn't like his singing at all. But me and a friend jumped on stage for the encore (Soul Kitchen), shared a joint with Robby Krieger during the song. I was right behind Ray, and actually had my hands on his shoulders that hit those keys.
Oh yeah - I was too busy thinking about live performance, but that song was a complete rip-off!

I played that for a few music friends and they both insisted (two separate times) it was The Doors.

That's funny, 'cos I didn't know 'til now that Astbury actually fronted The Doors for a time. It was obvious that he was always a fan.

Kudos for sharing a J with Robbie.

I’m not familiar with him. I’ll check him out.

You mean stylistically? his material? His voice? I don’t really see it.

On the first two albums, I think it’’s obvious that Springsteen’s primary influences are Dylan and Van Morrison - Morrison especially on Spirit In The Night and New York City Sereande. To my ears, he’s attempting to duplicate Van’s ‘yawl’ and the arrangements owe something to him, as well.

Lou Reed’s Walk On The Wild is somewhat reminiscent of Van as well, at least in terms of its arrangement (for which Mick Ronson was responsible). Listen to the strings at the end.

I'll admit that I'm a casual TW fan at best, but I don't hear any Beefheart influence beyond having a rather "unconventional" vocal approach.

I always thought of Spirit in the Night as an effort to package Moondance and And it Stoned Me into a single song. Did a good job, in my view.

There was this one kid at the Oak Park School of Rock who did the most astounding channeling of Morrison I've ever seen. I wasn't alone in this, after the show the house sound engineer said to me "That kid should quit school right now and join a Doors tribute band. He looks like he's been studying Doors concert films for 3 years."

I don't think most people have any idea just how cynical most house sound engineers tend to be, mixing sound for different bands every night, and how unusual it is for them to be impressed.

The Weeknd blatantly cribbed a lot of things Micheal did, even some of his signature dance moves.

Beach House built their entire career on plagiarizing The Cocteau Twins. Havn't seen anyone copy Queen yet though, that's a good one.
