Mitch was great, but is he forgotten? Certainly not among Hendrix fans :).

Jerry Gaskill from King's X is a monster player - particularly on the Gretchen & Faith albums; also Phil Gould from Level 42 was astoundingly great in their early days (when he was given the chance to shine)...the True Colours & Standing In The Light albums especially!

Iovine definitely had a vision for how he wanted the drums to sound. Listen how central the sound of the drums were on the albums he produced. Damn the Torpedoes was a breakthrough.

To get there, Iovine literally beat the crap of Lynch, who was a "feel" musician, and not the studio machine Iovine wanted.

In the end, the musical product was great, but its clear Lynch and Iovine felt it was an unpleasant experience, as they have said in the years after.

All that said, Stan gave the band a unique sound that was lost when he left. He always played for "the song" .

I also think of Casey Sheurell another monster ; His performance on the Jean Luc Ponty's live album is simply historic !

  8. Others have said these, but they deserve mention again. Pep Perrine and Jim McCarty

About Ian Paice, I think without him there's no more DP, as Bonham with LZ.

Don't forget Denny Carmassi. He has his place in rock history (first Montrose lp)

It was because Jimmy couldn't slice and dice the recording and surgically remove any little bit he didn't want to create his vision because of Stan's less than machine-like playing. I personally prefer his style over a drum machine but you can't ignore the end result from a fame and money perspective.

    Clive Bunker--Early Jethro Tull
    Dave Mattacks--Fairport Convention and others
Alice de Buhr- Fanny, no one has mentioned any female drummers and she is/was superb
Glad to see Stan Lynch mentioned, he might have been difficult to work with, but Tom Petty has never been as good
Jim McCarty, Mitch Ryder kept him in his second band Detroit, but it is his work with the Detroit Wheels that shall go down in history
Roger Hawkins from the Muscle Shoals studio band, on more hit songs than anyone other than Hal Blaine
Hal Blaine, Earl Palmer, Jim Gordon and Jim Keltner--studio musicians all, and responsible for many, many hits

Another great forgotten one: Curt Cress ! Absolutely awesome on the New Triumvirat's "Pompeii" lp released in 1977. He should have been among the greatest prog drummers.

    Spinal Tap drummers:
    • John "Stumpy" Pepys -- died in 1969 in a bizarre gardening accident.
    • Eric Childs -- died 1974, choking to death on someone else's vomit.
    • Peter "James" Bond -- spontaneously combusted on stage in 1977.
    • Mick Shrimpton, who replaced Bond, disappeared and is presumed dead, as his brother Ric replaced him in 1992 and interviews with Ric make reference to other Tap members saying "We're not sure we want to put your mum through this again." (Rip, June 1992). I can't find a cause of death stated anywhere, though.
    • In an interview on the Arsenio Hall Show in December 1992, David St. Hubbins referred to a drummer he did not name who had been accidentally packed with the band's equipment and never seen again. St. Hubbins also claimed then that the band had had 12 drummers.
Hanoi Rocks drummer Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley; unfortunate passenger in a car driven by Vince Neil of Motley Crue
