It wasn't a 'like' I just gave you. It was a 'love'. Downey is one of the best ever. Light of touch but still hard as nails. And groovy enough to swing with the best of 'em too.

Others: Paul Thompson from Roxy, Pretender Martin Chambers, a guy called Kenneth Kapstad from a band called Motopsycho none of y'all sadly has ever heard of and maybe the greatest and most forgotten of the lot: Phil Rudd.

Rudd, you say? Rudimentary, simplistic and crude? Eh, no. AC/DC without him makes no sense at all. He was their Al Jackson jr (another great drummer, btw). Without him the band sound almost like every other rock band and with him they groove like muddas.

The late Rick Coonce might fit the bill. From what I've read about him (and the Grass Roots) recently, he was a great drummer.....and clearly, forgotten.

Fantastic list of drummers here! I will mention Michael Shrieve because I finally bit on the new Santana Blu-ray Live at the House of Blues and recently viewed it. At the age of 67 still an awesome player! As a side note, he was a member of one of my favorite New Wave groups of the early 80's, Novo Combo.

Skip Moore who drummed on Walk Don't Run by The Ventures.

Not to mention Howie Johnson and Mel Taylor, also of The Ventures.

Okay, I'll offer Bun E Carlos.
I know, one of the all time greats so maybe he doesn't belong on this list. But Cheap Trick is still recording and playing and he's not in the band.
I find that heartbreaking and still haven't come to terms with it.
A man in part responsible for a band's signature and influential sound, now not in that band and yet the band carries on without him.
I think that qualifies as forgotten. Or at least on the way to forgotten. Sad.

You beat me to the punch about Mel Taylor. Mel was a POWERHOUSE drummer who made every Ventures record he played on (almost all of them after 1962) a better record.
