Here are some of my fav film scores:

Veritgo: Bernard Herrmann (one of the best composers/The 'Taxi Driver' gig literally killed him...)

The Third Man: Anton Karas (Who can not love this "zither" music...)

High Noon: Dimitri Tiomkin (one of the best)

2001: Various (a vacation to the senses)

Lalo Schifrin has done some of my favourites - Bullit & Cool Hand Luke are both perfect soundtracks for the films and are also great to listen to without the movie. In many instances Lalo recorded different versions of his 60's film scores for release on the soundtrack LP than the versions that appeared in the film. This is why some of those old soundtracks LPs sound so good - they were created with home listening in mind....

Maurice Jarre did a pretty good job with Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago and those John Williams scores for Star Wars, Superman and E.T. are pretty amazing in the cinema, although I'm not sure I'd want to listen to them at home much.....

I was always a big fan of the original Highlander movie and I loved the soundtrack by Queen. It was released as their "Kind of Magic" cd.

I have always liked the soundtrack for Leaving Las Vegas, mainly for Sting's versions of jazz standards that do not seem to be available on any other album; the rest of the music is fine, but nothing special.

    More soundtracks:

Dumb and Dumber for good choice of songs. I liked the way they used Nick Cave's Red Right Hand;)

Neil Young's soundtrack from Dead Man.

Just about anything by Ennio Morricone, but especially "Once upon a Time in America." Also just about anything from Bernard Herrmann.

How 'bout Max Steiner's score for the original "King Kong."

#1 and #2 on my all-time favorite movie list!

I love the soundtrack that was added to the Passion Of Joan Of Arc DVD.
