We all love our Floyd, Beatles, and Who, and they constantly come up in conversations revolving around which bands are the greatest.

That’s all well and good, but I wanted to know what some SHMF members think are some groups that don’t often get mentioned as one of the all time greats, but really deserve to be mentioned in that way more often.

My example would be Talk Talk. Utter brilliance just shines from every record they put out. Never made a bad song. Just listen to “Mirror Man” and then to “After The Flood” and you can hardly tell it’s the same band. Just amazing leaps and bounds in only 9 years between those songs. Mark Hollis was an undeniable genius.

    What about you?

I was going to say Radiohead but I think their greatness is pretty much universally accepted by now, right?

    So I'm going with Ween.

Yeah, but Talk Talk and Mark Hollis get mentioned fairly often as well. Also very deservedly so.

What about bands like Pixes or Talking Heads? I think they're, rightly, revered around here. But do enough people put them among the greatest ever? I say no

Edit: That's why I went with Ween. They're one of the greatest bands that I rarely see given their due.

Compared to the Mahavishnu Orchestra, everyone else is just messing about. That was the pinnacle.

Do Dire Straits get overlooked like that?

It's funny, when I was young they just seemed 'dad rock' and slightly naff. Past ten years or so though and they've become an enduring, brilliant favourite. The quality and depth just keeps coming.

The Velvet Underground- they aren’t so much ignored in the debate as put in the “influential but not quite there” corner along with a number of bands mentioned already

Not gonna lie, until now I never saw the image enlarged and I always thought it was Elvis. :hide:

I will always support any positivity toward the Kinks, but I think they're finally starting to get their due. A mere 55 years late, of course - but better late than never.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Sure Jimi Hendrix himself is quite rightly acknowledged as one of the best guitarists, but the same people then seem to forget to add The Jimi Hendrix Experience to the greatest bands of all time debates.

    Obviously kidding...

My personal opinion on who ithe greatest is Queen, but I don’t think that fits the theme of this thread so I will say Crowded House

The Kinks are overshadowed by the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who, but they are at the same level in my view. Not obscure enough? Then I would nominate the Small Faces.

Not a band, but Curtis Mayfield is still one of my favorites... in my book he's easily as good as Marvin Gaye or Stevie Wonder, but gets a lot less credit for some reason or another.
