Does anyone know if they have ever fixed the colour on the DVD of this so the Grinch is green, like he should be, rather than some yellowish brown colour? The VHS was always correct and I've never understood why the DVD was always so bad. But, I can't find my VHS copy this year. Christmas without Boris narrating the Grinch just isn't the same.

The DVD has the yellowish color Grinch, which I believe they explain is actually correct. I'd have to pop it in to be sure.

I just bought it and there's something that says "corrected version" or something like that. I assume it's a color corrected version.

Well, let us know what color he is after you watch it, please. They can say yellow is correct all they want, I've watched it for years and have grinch toys and books, he's green.

    One Grinch, two Grinch
    Old Grinch, new Grinch.... :D

Here's a side-by-side comparison from the DVD. On the left is the green Grinch and on the right is the yellowish, restored Grinch. The green version may have a framing issue because it looks squashed on the sides. Those black bars on either side of it came from the "green Grinch" screen capture.

The yellowish Grinch has Max looking better and a clearer picture.

Personally, I do like the look of the green Grinch better. Evidently he really was yellowish in the original broadcast so I guess we have to respect that.

The Gricnh was my first DVD ever and I went insane trying to get the "right" the color on it. It took me about an hour to finally except that it was correct.

I just looked on my DVD. On the top of the back cover it says "Digitally Enhanced Version" and has ©2002 listed for the Package, Artwork, Design & Summary.

Other than that I can't really help you guys out because I'm partially color blind. Sorry.

You know, as I sit here and watch this disc (for the first time) I see what they did. This version has been sharpened severely. There's a lot of grain in the whites and I'm seeing a bunch of digital-ness. Hmmmm.

My Grinch disc is copyright 2000. I think my copy is the second DVD of the Grinch to be released. There is no message on the package about digital enhancement.

If the color really bugs you, you can always imagine it's the '60s and your family can only afford a b&w TV, and just turn down the color on your set. :D

I emailed Jerry Beck about this; he wasn't involved with the DVD, so he said he look at the VHS vs. DVD versions. As I look at the images, you can see the Grinch's tongue is a bright red on the DVD version and his eyes are the same color as his skin, and Max looks like he's brown (the VHS picture makes Max look a tad greenish). Tough call, cause I like the green of the Grinch on the tape, but the other colors on the DVD look better, especially on Max...

    That's what I have too.

Grant Life is a rock, but the radio rolled me!

I prefer whichever is correct. I haven't bought this DVD yet, but now I will. I have no sentiment for the green grinch. The restored Grinch DVD looks cleaner and clearer with all the detail, according to the samples above.

The DVD include an old TNT special hosted by the late Phil Hartman and features interviews with Chuck Jones, THurl Ravencroft and Mrs. Geisel. Interesting pencil animations.

Noticing that they even used green with the JIm Carey version, I'd say he has to be green and not this lame yellow color. He was always green until this DVD release. Even the McDufus stuffed dolls were green!

On a slightly tangential note, would it be fair to say that Chuck Jones's Grinch has become the "definitive" version of the character, even more than Seuss's original?

(The Grinch of the book is, of course, black and white.)

Right, for me anyway, he has to be green. I believe It's on tv in the US Thirsday night. It may be interesting to see what colour he is.

Jerry Beck got back to me on the green sheen. Perhaps the kinda muted green shade is correct (what's on the negative) so that the Grinch would "play" well on the predominantly B&W tv sets still in use. This would be true of early Rocky/Bullwinkle, Flintstones and other made for tv toons of the era. Also, Metrocolor (the stuff used for the Grinch) is apparently a member of the Eastman color family prone to fading over time. J Beck sez these are just possibilities...

I don't know exactly how the image would show on an old b&w television screen. Maybe someone wants to play around with this:

You took the words out of my mouth, Dave. If the Grinch wasn't green, then how come Jim Carrey WAS green?

Maybe Ron Howard never got to watch the "corrected" version. :)

I wish that he never watched any version. That entire movie, to quote the Grinch, was nothing but "NOISE NOISE NOISE" (IMO)

Well, after watching this tonight I have to say if this has been "fixed" or "corrected" it was a crappy job. Out of curiosity I watched closely the Grinches colour. And... it kept changing a bit. Mostly he was that yucky yellowish colour but, everyonce in a while he would flash to the correct (IMO) green or sometimes more brownish yellow. With the green colour showing up once in a while I have to believe the the negative has faded on that particular shade. It was funny though, right before the show started the teaser for the show showed the green Grinch.

I'd bet that Jerry Beck's suggestion about the Metrocolor/Eastman color having problems over time might be on the right track...
