One of my favourite bands. Tour De Force is particularly awesome.

Don't think I've ever met anyone else from Britain who've ever heard them.

  3. Nick Drake wasn't big anywhere before that VW commercial raised his profile beyond the cult audience.

I've never understood the appeal of John Mayer?
I know he's quiet popular in the US.

Queen - by a country mile.

By the time "Another One Bites The Dust" hit no.1 in America in the summer of 1980, they were certifiably the biggest band in the world - job done as far as they were concerned. But the States turned off them very quickly. By the time they toured the US in support of "Hot Space" in 1982, the band were having trouble filling venues and were getting on each other's nerves, which is why they took a break in 1983. A new record deal in America with Capitol, and a new album in 1984, "The Works" seemed to be just the tonic. Then came the video for "Break Free" which was a loving homage to the UK soap opera "Coronation Street", but for some reason the US just couldn't stomach a British heavy rock band in drag. And that was it, for Fred's lifetime anyway.

I don't think many American rock fans ever understood the irony of Queen's music and image.

Yeah, Springsteen is great if you like hoky blue collar banter from a grown man reliving his youth for the thousandth time. Only concert I have ever walked out on.

Having grown up in Michigan, I prefer Bob Seger. I can say that Springsteen is no good and I can expect everyone to agree with me --- everyone except his fans.

With 11 US number one albums and 10 UK number one albums, somebody must like that hokey blue collar banter...

Indeed, the term "Boy Band" has always bugged me, why the chuff can't they just say "Vocal Group", coz that's what they are, rant, rant, rant...

I don't have problem with the term boy band. I have a problem with the revisionism. You don't take a term born out of the 90s and apply it to acts that came before; especially to ones that don't fit the template.

The irony is that Springsteen's youth wasn't blue-collar at all.

His background was blue collar but he was not. The inspiration for his music about the struggles of the working class was his father.

I actually worked with a guy who grew up a couple blocks from the Springsteens. It was far from a blue-collar neighborhood. His dad (about whom I know nothing) evidently did alright by himself and his family.

You really shouldn't talk about things you don't know (IMO). It's my understanding that his mother was a relatively successful legal secretary. She did alright for herself and her family.

Same reason they don't call Hair Metal bands "hard rock ensembles".

"Boy Band" describes a very specific kind of vocal group...

    "Who" "is" "they" "?"

So by definition, if they're not a vocal group, they're not a boy band.

Not sure what "far from blue collar" means - that it's upper-middle class? Wealthy?

Ah yes. If we don't enjoy their music, the problem is with us. I'm not a fan of Queen because I like my rock 'n roll music to have blues/country/folk/soul (American roots music) influences and I like it to swing (i.e. 'rock and ROLL' not just rock). I understand Queen just fine. I just don't like their music. :)
