Groups who split in two

After Alice Cooper the band split, there were two camps: Alice Cooper the solo artist and the very ill-fated Billion Dollar Babies band.

Upon Tommy James And The Shondells splitting, the rest of the band members sans Mr. James tried to carry on as Hog Heaven.

And then after Grand Funk (Railroad) dissolved and Mark Farner went on his own, the other members rebranded as Flint.

Or would these examples be for yet another thread?

 

LA Guns split into LA Guns and LA Guns

 

Wait, were The New Yardbirds even for real or just on paper prior to Page forming Les Zep?

 

This may be a bit if a cheat but with Rage Against the Machine the band split from their vocalist and picked up Chris Cornell and did the Audioslave thing for a few albums before they split back up into Rage and Soundgarden again.

The Housemartins became The Beautiful South and Norman Cook in his various guises (Beats International/Fatboy Slim)

 

Throbbing Gristle split into Psychic TV and Chris & Cosey/Creative Technology Institute. Later, Peter Christopherson and Jon Balance split from PTV to form Coil.

 

Put it this way: if somebody had suggested Roger Waters and Pink Floyd, what do you think?

 

The Specials were originally called The Special AKA, Gangsters was released as The Special AKA.

Nearly everyone from Fairport Convention started a new band with at least one other person who had been in Fairport, or would later join Fairport.

 

I've seen the new group name rendered as New Yardbirds and the Yardbirds featuring Jimmy Page, but it may be that the latter name was never used. It appears that they did tour Scandinavia using the old name (as 'The Yardbirds' or 'The New Yardbirds'), after which Chris Dreja sent his 'cease and desist' letter to Jimmy Page. That action necessitated coming up with a new name.

Nirvana split into the Foo Fighters and Sweet 75.

 

There are some who would argue about that . . . but this is exactly why I asked the question I did at the end.

 

Faust.

Some time in the last 20 years, they split into two groups.

One group is called Faust. The other is called Faust.

Different bands, different members (but with members of the original Faust lineup in both).

But still both playing and recording as Faust, and co-existing with each other.

 

It was four more years before he became a solo act. After the original Ants split to form BWW, Adam immediately put together a new lineup of the Ants.

Probably plenty of examples from the D.C./Dischord punk scene. Here's one: The Faith split into Rites of Spring and Embrace.

Rocket from the Tombs split into Pere Ubu and The Dead Boys.

 

Deep Purple split into Rainbow, Whitesnake and Paice Aston Lord, with Lord and Paice later joining David Coverdale in Whitesnake and Roger Glover joining Rainbow.
