I think that happened in 1997, after the unsuccessful Double Trio sessions in Nashville.

By the time 2000 rolled around, the new King Crimson quartet had a studio album out and was on tour.

After the deaths of guitarists Mickey Jones and later Deke Leonard the legendary Manband from Wales split into two..

MAN (the bass player, his son and some others from Deutschland)

SON OF MAN (Mickey Jones' guitarist son, the drummer and some others)

I have to confess I only lasted the first two Martin Ace led MAN albums before deciding to call it a day.

Baccara (Yes Sir I Can Boogie)
The two members split in 1981 and now each member has a new partner and both duo's go under the name of Baccara, so confusingly there are two versions of the same outfit.
I actually saw one of them performing in Spain a couple of years ago, but I'm not sure which version it was...

The Doors split into Butts Band and Nite City? Or does the timeline not line up properly?

This leaves out Uncle Tupelo, one of the best examples.

Then they aren't one of the best examples. However, Mike Heidorn, who had been in Uncle Tupelo was briefly an original member of Son Volt, which would make 2 members of Uncle Tupelo.

Bauhaus split into Peter Murphy solo and Love & Rockets - not sure if that counts?

Perfect example. Rumour has it their infamous manager Don Arden was behind the split with £ signs in his eyes.

It's kind of funny how they split the band members. Roy got the brass section and Jeff got the strings.

I don't know if this completely qualifies and I don't think I saw this already, but after the Modern Lovers split up, Jonathan Richman (went solo, initially with a different Modern Lovers), Jerry Harrison joined the Talking Heads, David Robinson eventually joined the Cars, and Ernie Brooks worked with David Johansson, among others.

I think it's also acceptable if two or more members remain with the original group, but I'll defer to @Say It Right because it's his thread.

I don't know, @Say It Right approved of Duran Duran splitting into Arcadia and Power Station, and I'm pretty sure those were also meant to be side projects. ;)

Can we get a ruling?

Napalm Death. While Napalm continued, the guys who left started Carcass and Cathedral.

I'm stretching it a bit, but this split yielded three bands.

The Duran Duran splinter groups are fine. Think that the perception was that DD were done more than just side projects at the time.

Compared with some of the replies, even Byrne/Eno and Tom Tom Club from Talking Heads wouldn't even be too bad. :shh:

Wouldn't this have been the case with The Move - splitting up into Electric Light Orchestra and Roy Wood's Wizzard? (Which, as I see, I'm the second consecutive person to so enquire.)
