German hardcore/melodic death metal (I guess this is what they call metalcore?) debut album. Sounds great. Heavy and crushing. Lots of pinch harmonics (I like!). Screamed vocals. Very well done album, if not original or that memorable. An interesting, heavy, but not aggressive instrumental in the middle of the album and a softer one at the end. Like all “hardcore” stuff I’ve ever listened to, this one suffers greatly from the lyrics. Can these guys write any lyrics that aren’t “oh, my gf left me. F that B! F YOU!!!!”. They are just as bad as Coheed and Cambria’s adolescent breakup lyrics. Just silly, IMO. All in all, a solid album. I liked quite a bit of it. Not my go to thing, but worth checking out if you like this genre.

Also, the new mc chris album is pretty good. :)

US Death Metal band EP from 2018 (first release). Very lo-fi 90s production. Cluttered and grimey. Not my cup of tea at all. Riffs are not great and solos (what there are) are flaccid. Drumming is decent then gets “bangy”. Bass is a fast rumble. I can’t recommend much here, if anything. It might just be me though.

I was listening to this and it was way too familiar sounding. Checked and sure enough I had it. Noting it's from 2012 I looked to see what these guys are up to if anything and Lo, a new album next month.

Entombed's Left Hand Path (1990) worship is strong here. I don't recall seeing this on any best of 2018 lists but it should have been. Especially on a specific Old School Death Metal list though I didn't see one of those. I linger over the marginal albums, wondering, and then the obviously better pops up to bust me out of Hamlet mode. Probably the best little guitar solos of last year are here.

Might be a little lightweight for this thread, but In The Woods' new one Cease The Day is worth a listen if you're familiar with their other albums - some reviews have suggested it's a return to their blacker roots....

Can you believe this is the first Shai Hulud I album I own? What to say.. Ok. More ‘metalcore’, eh? I can say that this album was quite aggressive and actually a little proggier than I would have thought. Progressive death metal? Progressive hardcore? Anyway, this is not something I will listen to frequently, but it was very well produced and the songwriting was, I though, quite good. I cannot find much fault with this album other than not my cup of tea genre-wise. I dug a bit of it though and was pleasantly surprised by the end that it flew by so quickly. Pretty good stuff really.

    Anthrax – Snapshot
RED Distribution “Snaphot” series of compilations packaged with 4 photo snapshots of the band. HORRIBLE compilation. Track listing isn’t even correct on the CD and the CD tracklist services (both show Metal Thrashing Mad ‘live’ and Panic ‘live’ but neither on there. 10 tracks listed but only 8 on cd). Horrible selection of songs (Worship AND Hymn 1, BOTH? Why?) One live track and 3 covers (which are great). Not EVEN for completists. May be the sh*ttiest cd I’ve ever seen.

I used to be really into the metalcore side of hardcore, and when I saw a post mentioning Shai Hulud I took note. They were never my favorite, but it's an excuse for me to talk about that stuff. Probably my favorite album in that sort of genre is Torn Apart's "Nothing is Permanent."

Torn Apart - Nothing Is Permanent [1997]

I could also mention stuff like Earth Crisis and Snapcase but it's more likely that those aren't new to anyone here.

With song titles like “Deep in the Snuffaluffagus” and “Fart Blossom”, what could go wrong?
Vocals that alternate between a cement mixer and a stuck pig. Precision bang/crash drumming. Squeally guitars (when not in a riff). And there is some bass. If that sounds good to you, you’ll love it. Me?...

That's cool man. Never could get into hardcore, much less metalcore. The only hardcore type band I ever liked was Full Blown Chaos, but probably because I saw them open for Strapping Young Lad and Superjoint Ritual. At Disneyland... LOL.

I always felt that hardcore had to be experienced live. It never translated totally to a recording.

 I love the perspective from the rear. That's more informative than the usual. I know next to nothing about Hardcore type genres but there was one song last year that I loved the chorus part. I don't know what the lyrics are but I heard massive passion. A Rorschach test you can fill in any injustice you like. I involuntarily kept picturing scenes of injustice on a big screen behind the band.
A little after 2:30. Also a tasty bit of guitar at 4:14

Haha yeah. Because it put a dopey grin on my face I had to listen to a band called Beaten to Death. I was hoping it was to my taste but it wasn't. Too bad. And last night I was puzzling over Outer Heaven. What does that mean? What an awful Metal band name. The music, I kept switching between admiring the skill and hating it. The most relaxing Death Metal album, which is not a crime (or is it?), it would be best played during a session of hot yoga.
