I only had a little time to begin exploring Hail Spirit Noir who should be appreciated by fans of Oranssi Pazuzu. A second single from the upcoming album.

The HSN exploration took me as far as a the opening track off a 2014 album. Something exceedingly cool is the bandcamp has their first two albums available as digitized from the vinyl masters resulting in DR10. And I can't find the link now.

Understandably a very quiet couple of weeks in metal amid international and and national calamities. Still I was in the habit of looking around. And never connected with anything decent. The one interesting metal thing I learned was regarding recording gear and technique. I get the feeling this is unique to Subterranean Watchtower Studios run by Horrendous member Damian Herring. I've never encountered the word "reamping" before and after reading the interview I think I need comparative samples to really get it. It's all about guitar tone I think.

Inside the Subterranean Watchtower: A Conversation with Damian Herring About ‘Reamping’ | Decibel Magazine
"So what is reamping, and why is it something bands would want to have done?"

"Reamping is the process of playing a previously-recorded signal through an amplifier. You could “reamp” anything, but most of the time, we’re talking about reamping a guitar track. In a typical recording scenario, a guitar is plugged into an amp and speaker cabinet, and the speakers are miked up and that signal is recorded.

Another way to record a guitar, however, is to capture the raw sound of the guitar pickups (called a DI or direct inject [or ‘direct input]). In a reamping situation, you take the recorded DI and run it through a reamp device and then into a guitar rig. Then you record that amped signal (by placing a mic on the speaker cabinet) just like in the first example. It’s as if the guitarist is right there performing in the same room, but he/she could actually be thousands of miles away, or have recorded the parts years ago. You’re simply playing back the previously recorded material, and re-recording it with an amp."

The most recent reamped album which comes out June 26.

Of course, a week after I purchase the "tour edition" of ILYAYD which includes a Blu-ray of this show they end up throwing the whole thing on YouTube for free.

Listening to THOU rip thru a bunch of Nirvana tunes.

Thou Release Surprise Nirvana Covers Album 'Blessings Of The Highest Order': Stream

Today, Thou have released Blessings Of The Highest Order, a new digital collection of all the Nirvana covers that they’ve released over the years. The album showed up mysteriously on Spotify last night, with no advance warning and no social-media alert from the band. Today, it eventually showed up on Bandcamp. It rules.

Nirvana were plenty heavy, but they were never Thou-level heavy. Even the prettiest songs on the collection — “Something In The Way,” for instance — become grimy doom hymns in Thou’s hands. The already-heavy songs become wild, feral tantrums. Thou always let the melodies shine through, but they heap plenty of scuzz on top of those melodies, too. It’s cool to hear these familiar songs twisted into new forms. Stream the collection below.

Still not much new out there that I liked enough for the Hallowed Halls of Grrrrr. Lots of "Mmm...nah". So I purchased the split w. Almyrkvi, by The Ruins Of Beverast from May 29 just for one song but how I love it. It's amazing how while checking out lesser offerings and being unaffected I would end the dull session with one recent proven song and be genuinely moved heart and soul (never was clear how those two are different). I love this style of metal with large orchestration, layers of sound, contrasts between the heavy and the delicate, a solid main melody running through it and a majestic, emotional ending. Metal with muscles unhurried and shoulders broad enough to lift the world.
