Just finished binge-watching this excellent show. It stars Jean Smart as an older, well-established comedian who reluctantly hires a young woman (Heidi Einbinder) to help her produce fresh material for her act. The show is so well written and acted that I was disappointed when the last episode was over. Anybody else have any thoughts on this series?
Loved it!! Jean Smart is the best(she was also great in Mare Of Easttown). BTW it's Hannah Enbinder, who is the daughter of original SNL cast member Laraine Newman. She is wonderful as is the rest of the cast. Writing was great, story lines interesting and funny. Look forward to season 2.
Best show streaming right now! (I can't wait for the "haters" to comment on this brilliant show so I can add them to my ignore list; if they already aren't on it.) And it also brings to the forefront how absolutely crappy network television has become & getting worse all of the time. Here we go! So, @NickySee? You are not "highly recommended". It's smart and funny. You, obviously, aren't. Ignore!
Convincingly portraying a professional comedian has got to be one of the most difficult roles an actor can take on. Jean Smart gets better and better and I was involved and amused throughout.
I liked it, it wasn’t anything earth shattering but Jean Smart is always GREAT and she’s on form here some real funny moments here and there Pretty good overall I’ll watch season 2 !
Watched it on the recommendation of my oldest daughter. Enjoyed it quite a bit. Very well written, although there were a few forced moments, but nothing's perfect. Oh wait, Fleabag is perfect.
apparently her husband (of 34 years) died one week before ending shooting S1 , must have been real tough on her.....
I heard that her scene at the eulogy (sorry folks, I won't spoil who passed) was filmed immediately after his death. She felt it was cathartic. Jean Smart Opens Up About Death Of Husband Richard Gilliland While Filming ‘Hacks’
Those middle episodes were a little tough, though. The misadventures of a 20-something making one bad decision after another - seen that before.
I love the show too. I feel sure the Jean Smart character was based on Joan Rivers, who also was a workaholic and would do her routine anywhere. I've seen the documentary on Joan Rivers, and I can see some character traits they share (although Joan wasn't demeaning to the people around her).
Now that it's a part of the nomenclature, there is always going to be irrelevant-or-not things compared to it. Buzzwords have to sink or swim on their own.
The tone of this so-called comedy is the backlash at political correctness. If that's a perspective you find funny so be it.
