I’m gutted. Hal was an old friend and associate of mine and my family’s. He and my Dad produced the Lenny Bruce box set together. He was a great guy.

Somehow did not realize he produced Lucinda Williams' West album, which is one I'm very fond of.

Much of the material was written in the wake of Lucinda's mother's passing, so an entire album of longer, understated, "moody" (i.e., contemplative) songs, which I think caused it to be dismissed a little by some fans/critics at the time. But they envelope you, and take you along by the hand almost, and Willner really helped bring out that feel.

And yes @TeddyB - am so very sorry for your loss.

Will link to this song - just because.

I've been reading several articles saying that he either died on Monday or Tuesday, but I can’t seem to find an exact day that he died.

Thank you! The reason why I wanted to ask is because I'm curious to know if the song with Charles Rocket is there.

I didn't know before now that he was musical director of the "Sunday night" / "Night music" series in the late 80s, that captured live so many historic musicians and turned me on to a lot of great music. Thank you Sir.

    Very sorry to hear this.
I think Sunday Night may have been the overall greatest music show that was ever produced for television.
And I like a lot of the old music related TV shows. Just my opinion.
Indeed losing Hal is a huge loss!

Hal I love you. I liked you in my life so much. When I got horrible reviews you sent me a full email of Lou Reed quotes on how to view critics. It meant so much to me. You changed my way of thinking on how to make stuff. You made what you wanted w/ the people you loved. Bye Hal

His show NIGHT MUSIC gave artists like Sonic Youth and the Pixies their first exposure on American national television. This
appearance from Mary Margaret O'Hara is unbelievable (watch the introduction!)

    RIP

He was one of the few SNL staffers to work for all 3 of SNL's producers.

That there isn't a Sunday Night /Night Music DVD set is a damn shame. Maybe SHOUT! Factory can get on it.
The guy made a lot of great music possible, R.I.P. Mr. Willner

    Such a sad loss. RIP

I particularly like this Carla Bley/Phil Woods collaboration from the Weill tribute album:

True. He also knew when to just let a master play. The Jaki Byard solos that open and close the album are great.

Conventional wisdom is that a Night Music project would be a music rights nightmare. That show was the best though. RIP.

I loved his decision to use scratch track vocals, gave a really eerie sheen to the whole thing and it sounded so different than her previous slightly overdone albums

It was this morning, Tuesday, according to his friend of 25 years Joan Wasser on Facebook, who records under the name Joan As Police Woman. Yesterday was his 64th birthday :(

Yeah, that is gonna be major road block. At least you'd think Broadway Video could get it up on Hulu like the SNL episodes.
