There are many here who have been devoted to music at one level or another.

Sometimes it is everything, or just about.

    Do you wonder?

Has it made you enjoy everything else even that much more?

Has it made you many new friends?

    Has it ruined relationships?

Has it given you a reason to live?

Has it kept you nearly broke for most of your years?

Have you reached a spiritual peak and a nirvana while listening?

Does everyone around you yell "Turn it down!"?

Do you still experience the thrill of discovery?

Does it help you remember the past?

Does it keep you from ever being bored?

Has anyone ever said, "It's me or the music!"?

    etc.

    etc.

Make up your own questions, or at least tell us what you think.

    Has it been worthwhile?

    Yes.

    Has it ruined relationships?
    No.

Has it given you a reason to live?
    Yes.

Has it kept you nearly broke for most of your years?
    Yes.

Have you reached a spiritual peak and a nirvana while listening?
    Yes.

Does everyone around you yell "Turn it down!"?
    No, because I use headphones.

My answers are in the context of someone who has made music a career, too.

...........Has it made you enjoy everything else even that much more?

Yes, it's like when a film has a good soundtrack versus no soundtrack.

...........Has it made you many new friends?

    Yes, tons of them.

    ...........Has it ruined relationships?

Definitely. Temptations of the road, merely being away on the road, etc.

...........Has it given you a reason to live?

It's been a good reason to live. It's not as if I wouldn't have a reason to live if there were no music, though.

...........Has it kept you nearly broke for most of your years?

It's given me an income, a living and it's caused me to spend lots of money, too.

...........Have you reached a spiritual peak and a nirvana while listening?

Yes, and while playing, too. What's really specially is when it happens among the whole group while playing.

...........Does everyone around you yell "Turn it down!"?

Usually I try to keep it relatively turned down because of hearing damage over the years.

...........Do you still experience the thrill of discovery?

    Yes, regularly.

...........Does it help you remember the past?

Definitely. Music can transport you back to very specific events, times, feelings, etc.

...........Does it keep you from ever being bored?

    Certainly.

...........Has anyone ever said, "It's me or the music!"?

Yes, and it was never them. ;-) Partially because someone who'd say that isn't worth trying for in my opinion.

After all these years it's still something I don't understand.

There have been times when it's made me feel so good... and I don't know why.

Whenever any one says to me that I am OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) about music, I immediately agree that I am obsessive.

But I steadfastedly deny that I am compulsive. I am very selective about what music I acquire. The fact that I am into thousands of musicians and styles is beside the point.

    For sure.

Even if that timeframe is really short at the moment, it's always been a positive for me in terms of my interests. It's niche as hell, and I don't know anyone I can get into proper discussion with in my personal life, but I don't put much into how that factors into my personal life really. I've spent a decent amount of money on gear and music once I had the means, and I rarely regretted it. I idolize people nobody knows, and I'm fine with that. If anything I'm more upset that the people I know in real life often don't get how much I am enthralled about the hobby and assume I'm still the same person I was 10 years ago.

Do most of your friends, or at least a good portion of them, come, or start, with a common love of music (even if different stuff)?

Yes, I am very careful about that. As someone with a genuine OCD sufferer in the family I know how debilitating and traumatic that condition can be and it would be inappropriate to describe myself in those terms. But there is certainly obsession in as much as buying, listening to, reading about, watching documentaries about and discussing music takes up a disproportionate amount of my life compared to most other people.

I have a lot of hobbies, but collecting/listening to music is by far the one with the best expense/enjoyment ratio. Like, I spend almost as much time and money collecting Blu Rays as CDs, but I might watch each Blu Ray 2-3 times at most, but I'll listen to an album dozens and dozens of times. And I've spent a lot more money on "cool cars" than music, but cars mostly just frustrate. Music is just the best.

I thought that the question about "ruining relationships" was interesting. When I was younger I was very opinionated about music, to the point that I wouldn't date or hang out with certain people because of their music taste. So that was really stupid of me.

Nope. Most of them are completely bewildered and dismissive of the value I place on music and especially of my musical taste. It is an ephemeral, disposible pleasure for them but no more. There are a couple of exceptions.

Yes, it's made me enjoy everything much more and brought me many new friends.
No, it's never ruined any relationships.
People gave up telling me to "turn it down" years ago.
It hasn't kept me nearly broke but it definitely takes up almost all of my discretionary spending.
It definitely helps me remember the past.
I live for the "high" of the thrill of discovery.
No one's ever said "it's me or the music" probably because they all knew what I'd choose.
And it almost always keeps me from being bored.
I'm a music fanatic. I have been from a very young age. I wouldn't change it for the world. As I'm sure I've said before, speaking from experience, it sure beats over-indulging in alcohol and/or drugs.
I wouldn't change anything if given the chance.

    Do you wonder?
    Much.

Has it made you enjoy everything else even that much more?
Impossible to say. I suspect yes though.

Has it made you many new friends?
Yes. I don't have any non music related friends.

    Has it ruined relationships?
It's been a contributory factor a couple of times.

Has it given you a reason to live?
    Oh yes.

Has it kept you nearly broke for most of your years?
    Oh yes.

Have you reached a spiritual peak and a nirvana while listening?
Impossible to say. I suspect yes though.

Does everyone around you yell "Turn it down!"?
Not anymore, as I specifically moved to a house where I can play loud and not annoy anyone.

Do you still experience the thrill of discovery?
    Yes.

Does it help you remember the past?
    Yes, I guess.

Does it keep you from ever being bored?
No. But it's kept me from being bored countless times.

Has anyone ever said, "It's me or the music!"?
No. But I would never choose to be with someone who wasn't a music nut.

    Has it been worthwhile?
I don't know, but I can't think of anything else that could take it's place.

I devoted my life to music as a record collector by the time I was 6 years old. I am 62 years old now and I still have a good stereo, still have a big collection, still pursue my passion and I am still married to my high school sweet heart.

Life has been good to me......so far.
