Both Hendrix and Cream debuted in late '66, but who else released music this year that you would consider remarkably heavy for the period?

One of the heavier songs I can think of is Red Sky at Night by The Accents, released in October:

The Accent is a hard one to beat, but I'll add Aussie group The Black Diamonds with this ditty released in November.
Fab Jeff Beck inspired guitar solo at 1:36.

Definitely a heavy guitar riff for '66!

Love's Da Capo album was released in November 1966 and has a few heavy proto-punk moments...

Sounds like The Yardbirds on meth!

Speaking of The Yardbirds, the first half of the closer to their self-titled '66 album helped lay the groundwork for the Sabbath sound:

Not necessarily the best quality. But the video has a goat.

Let's up the ante a little further with The Swamp Rats' 1966 versions of "Louie" and The Sonics' own "Psycho":

You're right. Embarrassing... I will edit my first post.

Edit: seems like I can't edit it.

P.S. It is a pretty heavy song even for 1967.
