    Some of the ones mentioned came out in 1968. This one was released December 1967:

    1967 starts getting pretty heavy by comparison. Vanilla Fudge; Hendrix;
    Blue Cheer (the first band of national renown named after a brand of street acid) recorded their debut in '67; Jeff Beck's one-off supergroup with Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, Keith Moon, and Nicky Hopkins released 'Becks Bolero';
    Jake Holmes released the original recording of his frightening 'Dazed and Confused' .. and Minnesota's Calico Wall unleashed this utterly unhinged psych-punk masterpiece, 'Im a Living Sickness'

    This one would be a contender if they turned up the fuzz. Otherwise, the vocals and drums.....

    Depends on what you class as heavy. I can't think of a heavier album than Blue Cheer, Vincibus Eruptum. Yes I know it was released on Jan 16, 1968 but it was recorded in 67.
    The album is a heavy acid rockers gem isn't it. And very heavy

    Absolutely, the Amboy Dukes were players in the "heavy" sweepstakes...your post reminded me of their great cover of Baby Please Don't Go, a classic of heavy Detroit rock from that same 1967 LP.

    'If 6 was 9' by Jimi Hendrix Experience is pretty heavy - certainly the heaviest track on the band's sophomore album, 'Axis : Bold as Love', imo. I'd be inclined to vote for that in a heaviest-of-'67 poll. The thread states "released in '67", which precludes Iron Butterfly's debut which was recorded in '67 but released in '68;
    likewise for Blue Cheer's debut lp.

    Great tune. Funny, I could have sworn that Tim said that the Black Sabbath eponymous release was all original material, but this is the second cover on that album that I am aware of; Evil Woman being the first. Amazing album nonetheless.

    That guitar part after the drum break could challenge Hendrix in the high volume department
