Yes, I was thinking 'what's that tune from ...Baxter's again?'

Cassady's bass sound always struck me as 'metal,' which I guess is not quite the same as heavy...

A great choice for one year later in 1968.

Different track, Swamp Rats were mentioned

I'd also count their rave up on "Tobacco Road"

One of the best songs on the album with rare Jorma lead vocal I think

Slightly off topic, but are there two drummers in Black Roses. I really like that song. Didn't discover it until '69.

I would have thought something off the Procol Harem album would qualify.

Now that I think about it, the opening song on Sgt. Pepper must have sounded somewhat heavy back then.

Clear Light had two drummers, one of them being Dallas Taylor. I can't say that both drummers were used together on every track but you can hear both of them on "Mr. Blue" for sure.

This won't be the heaviest song, but it's up there thanks to that gritty guitar part running through it. The kinda fuzzy solo doesn't hurt either -

Yeah, this is clearly heavier than Spanish Castle Magic. Not as heavy as the song Black Sabbath, though (or Behind the Wall of Sleep, for that matter).
